“Why? Chihiro Rokuhira, here's your answer, as well as a declaration of war. It's all so that I can wield Shinuchi.” Yura, when questioned about his motives by Chihiro[source]

Yura ( (ゆら) Yura) is the leader of the Hishaku and the one who orchestrated the group's murder of Kunishige and theft of his Enchanted Blades three years ago. He is motivated by his desire to wield Magatsumi. As a result of his actions, he is Chihiro's archenemy and the primary target of his revenge.

He is the primary antagonist of the series, and a major overarching antagonist in the Rakuzaichi Arc alongside the rest of the Hishaku as a whole.

Appearance[]

Yura is a tall man with dark hair and concentric rings around the pupils of his light-coloured eyes. Unique dot-like markings extend above and beneath his eyes. He wears a dark suit, tie and pants over a white shirt, appearing identical to a typical gang member from a distance. Following his battle with Chihiro, his right arm was cut off, but it appeared to be reattached by the time of his later meeting with his subordinates.

Personality[]

Yura is an incredibly calm and collected individual. He is able to keep his composure under any situation; even losing his own limb. When held at blade-point by Chihiro and interrogated, he refused to respond, stating he would only speak if he felt like it. Despite this statement, he openly converses with Chihiro about his motives and process towards his goal, though this may be due to Yura's curiosity, desiring to see how Chihiro had changed three years after instilling hatred within him.

Yura is also incredibly dedicated; for his goal of wielding the Enchanted Blade Magatsumi, he worked tirelessly for three years in order to break the seal surrounding it. However, he does not let his goal get in the way of his logic; when given the chance, he refused to remove the blade from its box himself, wary of what Magatsumi's wielder would do once the blade was unsealed.

Relationships[]

Chihiro Rokuhira[]

Chihiro is Yura's archenemy. Yura knew who Chihiro was prior to their first meeting, having sent his agents to murder Kunishige, his father, spurring Chihiro on a path of revenge. The two of them first meet during the Rakuzaichi, with Yura briefly deterring Chihiro and Hakuri's plan to stop the event. Engaging and defeating him in a brief fight, he reveals himself as the one responsible for his father's death, as well as officially declaring war against Chihiro by revealing his plans to wield the Magatsumi, cementing their newfound rivalry.

Despite the two only meeting once, Chihiro grows immense hatred towards Yura for his role as the leader of the Hishaku, declaring while abandoning his fight to resume his mission that the next time they meet, Chihiro will kill him the first chance. On his own end, Yura seems to mutually share Chihiro's enmity, taunting him during their brief fight and expressing interest in the "seeds of hatred" he created from killing Kunishige. However, he expresses twisted interest in Chihiro's growth, as well as his maturity in abandoning his fight to rescue his friends. He does not underestimate Chihiro, however, fully knowing the boy is a major enemy due to his desire for revenge; Hiruhiko reveals during their fight that Yura specifically ordered for him to kill Chihiro when he had the chance.

Plot[]

Background[]

The Hishaku first emerged four years before the start of the series, with Yura in charge of their ranks.[1] Three years before the beginning of the series, he orchestrated an attack on the Rokuhiras' home, three Hishaku sorcerers killing Kunishige and stealing the six Enchanted Blades, instilling within Chihiro a desire for vengeance against them.[2]

Roughly three years after stealing the Enchanted Blades, Yura managed to break the seal around the box of Magatsumi, though he left the rope in place and the box unopened.[3]

Vs. Sojo Arc[]

Following his supposed submission of Shinuchi to the Rakuzaichi, Genichi Sojo met with two members of the Hishaku, one of which possibly being Yura, to report that everything was going as planned.[4]

Sometime after Sojo's death on October 14th and before the Rakuzaichi, Yura gave a piece of semi-stabilised Datenseki to Kyora for him to use at his discretion.[5]

Rakuzaichi Arc[]

Seven days prior to the Rakuzaichi, a member of the Hishaku (possibly Yura) dialled Kyora Sazanami, asking about his run-through of the auction. Kyora inquired into the reasoning for their selling of Shinuchi, but the Hishaku member refused to comment, merely stating they wouldn't do anything that would put the Rakuzaichi at risk. They brought up the danger of the seventh Enchanted Blade, but Kyora revealed he wasn't too concerned about it, even though he'd probably lose in a fight against a blade, and maintained that Shinuchi would not pass into the hands of those who didn't follow the auction's rules.[6]

Yura was present incognito at the Rakuzaichi, mingling with several other guards. As Chihiro ran towards him on his way to the Naginojoen, Yura created a wall of trees to prevent Chihiro from progressing and confronted him, commenting on Cloud Gouger's limited power now that it was broken.[7] Chihiro attacked him but Yura immediately kicked him into the wall of trees and summoned branches to trap him. He then revealed his identity and involvement in Kunishige's murder to Chihiro, and as Chihiro asked why the Hishaku had put Shinuchi up for auction and killed his father, Yura replied his end goal was to wield Shinuchi.

Yura did not bother to deal with Chihiro, as he did not pose a threat with a damaged Cloud Gouger, and instead offered to talk, desiring to see how Chihiro's hatred had grown. Chihiro refused, resonating his desire for Cloud Gouger to die at his side and using Mei: Shred to burst from the wall.[8] The two's battle resumed, Chihiro now able to even sever Yura's arm, but the latter was nonplussed and kept pace with him even without using sorcery. Considering the situation, Chihiro announced his desire to kill Yura at a later date and burst through the wall to the other side, surprising Yura.[9]

An armed Hiyuki Kagari then walked down the stairs behind Yura, preparing to engage him but having not seen his hand-crest. Yura refused to fight, having already achieved his goal of meeting with Chihiro, and he acknowledged the Rakuzaichi was the Sazanami's area of concern, not his own, before promptly forming a hand sign and teleporting out, Hiyuki then recognising the crest on his hand.[10]

Following his departure, several Hishaku members attended a meeting presided over by their leader, now with arm restored. There, the Hishaku members questioned Yura's decision not to open Shinuchi's box, and he revealed he intended for Kyora to make use of Shinuchi during the Rakuzaichi in order to test how the blade's wielder would react.[11]

Sword Bearer Assassination Arc[]

After confirming the Kamunabi had taken possession of Shinuchi, the Hishaku were glad to see their plans were being fulfilled. Yura noted it was time for them to begin their next move.[12]

Abilities[]

As the leader of the Hishaku, a small group of elite sorcerers, Yura is extremely powerful.[13] He was able to fight against Chihiro Rokuhira wielding Cloud Gouger without using any sorcery at all but instead with only his hand-to-hand combat skills,[14][15] and was even capable of undoing the seal that was placed on Magatsumi by the three highest-ranking leaders of the Kamunabi in merely three years (which Togo Shiba reckoned an expert sorcerer would take ten years to break).[16]

As a sorcerer, Yura has accomplished the first stage of spirit energy usage, being able to use his spirit energy to strengthen his body to superhuman levels.

Enhanced Strength: Yura possesses incredible physical strength, enough to create a small crater in the ground with a single kick.[17]

Enhanced Speed and Reflexes: Yura is extremely fast; he was able to instantly appear behind Chihiro despite being directly in front of him,[18] and was even able to get behind Chihiro a second time when the latter was using Mei: Shred.[19] His reflexes are also top notch, being able to easily react to Chihiro even while he was using Cloud Gouger's lightning cloaking to increase his speed.[20] Even when Chihiro increased his speed further using Mei: Shred, Yura was still able to track Chihiro's movements, though he suffered several wounds in the ensuing clash.[21]

Enhanced Endurance: Yura has tremendous levels of physical endurance, stamina, and tolerance for pain. Despite having his right arm cut off, he showed no signs of pain and continued fighting.[22] He even allowed Chihiro to deliberately stab him in his left shoulder, only having a smile on his face.[23]

Combat Prowess[]

Master Hand-to-Hand Combatant: Yura is highly skilled in close-quarters combat, using only his hand-to-hand skills to engage Chihiro with despite the latter wielding an enchanted blade.[24]

Sorcery[]

Wall of Trees

Yura summons a wall of trees.

Tree Generation: Yura is able to summon trees, similar to his subordinate. So far, he has only used it to create a wall of trees to block a corridor and prevent Chihiro from reaching Hakuri.[25] The trees are incredibly durable, able to survive a lightning blast from the Enchanted Blade Cloud Gouger, though when Cloud Gouger was used with the direct aim of blasting through the wall, the wall was broken. In addition, any destroyed parts of the trees can regenerate in seconds.[26]

Fire-Based Teleportation: Yura uses this type of movement sorcery that is separate from his own sorcery. He forms a hand sign with his right hand and teleports, with his prior location vanishing into flames. It is identical to the teleportation used by one of his subordinates.[27]

Etymology[]

The kanji for Yura ( (ゆら) Yura) can be translated as both "secluded" and "ghost".
