“You give off the exact same vibe as him, so there's no doubt about it. It's been 18 years. It's like meeting him again after all this time.” Uruha to Chihiro Rokuhira, remarking on his similarity to his father.[source]

Yoji Uruha ( (うる) () (よう) () Uruha Yōji) was one of the remaining Enchanted Blade wielders from the Seitei War. He held a Lifelong Contract with the blade Kumeyuri, given to him by Kunishige Rokuhira eighteen years ago.

He was a major ally of Chihiro Rokuhira in the Sword Bearer Assassination Arc.

Appearance[]

Uruha was a slim man of average height. He had short dark green hair tied in a knot in the top of his head and dark green eyes with red eyeliner, though part of the topknot was cut off by Samura during the Hishaku's attack on Senkutsuji Temple. His outfit consists in a black haori under a long white robe, as well a pair of black pants and sandals completing the ensemble. During his stay at Kokugoku Hot Spring, Uruha possessed an amigasa hat with a black square adorning it and black belts hanging from the edge, though Uruha cut through it during a confrontation after fleeing the Sanso.

Personality[]

Uruha was a generally stoic man who maintained concentration on his goals, especially during serious situations such as in combat. Outside combat, however, Uruha was a much more open individual, especially around Kunishige Rokuhira, whom he greatly idolized and respected.

Plot[]

Past[]

Eighteen years ago, Uruha fought in the Seitei War using the Enchanted Blade Kumeyuri, and developed a great respect for Kunishige Rokuhira. After the war, he willingly gave Kumeyuri back to Kunishige.

Three years before the present, after the Hishaku assassinated Kunishige and Misaka and stole the Enchanted Blade, Uruha was relocated by the Kamunabi to the Sanso Kokugoku Hot Spring, where a Kamunabi guard force, the Kokugoku Steam Squad was installed. Uruha entered a depressive state upon hearing Kunishige was murdered.

Sword Bearer Assassination Arc[]

Kokugoku Hot Spring was attacked by several sorcerers contracted by the Hishaku who had been given Datenseki, and the Kokugoku Steam Squad quickly ushered Uruha to get away from the fortress for his own safety. Uruha later made it to Atago Station, where he encountered Hakuri Sazanami, and after dispatching several sorcerers the two made it onto a train where Chihiro Rokuhira met with him. Seeing Kunishige's resemblance within Chihiro, Uruha was revitalised, willing to fight by his side.[1]

Chihiro revealed his plan was to head to Senkutsuji Temple and meet with the wielder there, Seiichi Samura, so Hakuri could retrieve two blades at once when his powers recovered. Uruha and Chihiro then discussed Kunishige, and Uruha stated he was grateful Kunishige wasn't alone during his time in hiding. As the train pulled into another station, Uruha saw the bodies of four of the Steam Squad on a nearby bench, but apart from cold acceptance he showed no reaction. The individual responsible, Hiruhiko of the Hishaku, then boarded the train with several other sorcerers, and Chihiro and Uruha prepared to face them.[2]

Chihiro delivers a wide area Kuro slash

Uruha cut down a sorcerer attempting to attack him through the train window as Chihiro engaged several more, using Nishiki. Hiruhiko used Blood Crane, sending forth origami cranes that sliced through a sorcerer and momentarily flew into Chihiro's eyes disrupting his vision just as Hiruhiko attacked him with a sword. Chihiro sliced through only to see the cranes had transformed into shuriken that had impaled Uruha, though he was not severely injured. In order to deal with the guards at once, Chihiro called 'Centipede' to Hakuri before using Kuro in a circular motion, and Hakuri quickly dragged Uruha down underneath the attack, which cleaved through all the enemy sorcerers minus Hiruhiko.

Seeing how held up Chihiro was with fighting Hiruhiko while trying to protect himself, Uruha yelled for Chihiro not to worry about him, and Chihiro threw himself and Hiruhiko off the train to get him away from Uruha.[3] With no more attackers on the train, Hakuri and Uruha settled in, Hakuri noting there would be sorcerers waiting at the station to take them to Senkutsuji. As the two got off the train, two sorcerers greeted them, who Uruha recognised as being from Masumi. The four used a mandala to move directly to the temple.

As they moved into the temple, Samura greeted the group warmly, though at first mistook Hakuri for Chihiro based on his smell. Samura greeted Uruha casually, who returned the greeting, and Uruha was surprised to hear Samura knows about Chihiro. Samura revealed he hadn't known for over a decade, with Kunishige's whereabouts having been kept extremely secret. Hakuri and Samura began to discuss Chihiro, but the nearby monk suddenly alerted Samura that enemy sorcerers were attacking. Samura began mobilising the forces with one of the Masumi sorcerers, while the other took Hakuri to a room to recover his sorcery. Samura urged Uruha to get some rest as well, having an inkling as to what he had gone through, and Uruha followed Hakuri.

Hakuri spotted an explosion outside and was concerned for Samura and Senkutsuji's safety, knowing what had happened in Kokugoku, but Uruha assured him Senkutsuji's security was far stronger than Kokugoku's, primarily due to Samura himself being extremely strong. Uruha then yelled to Samura that Chihiro would be arriving soon with information about the Hishaku, which pleased him.[4] Hakuri wondered if Samura fought using his sense of smell, but the Masumi sorcerer present told him he only used his sense of smell to detect allies and old friends. The other Masumi sorcerer then entered the recovery room, grimly revealing that there were over twice the number of enemies than there were at Kokugoku.

Hakuri was extremely concerned about how Samura would be able to fight, but Uruha told him Samura fought using his sense of hearing as well as echolocation, rapidly unsheathing and resheathing his blade as part of his Iai technique and using the sounds' reverberations to gather information on enemies' locations and sizes.[5]

When the fedora-wearing Hishaku sorcerer attacked Senkutsuji, Uruha noticed the commotion and was visibly discomforted.[6] As the Makizumi left to support Samura in battle, Uruha and Hakuri were escorted to a back exit by one of the monks, Ryo Fuura, but the exit was ambushed by Datenseki-wielding sorcerers who killed Fuura and forced Uruha and Hakuri to run to the main temple area where Samura and the Makizumi were fighting. Uruha drew his blade and began fighting, narrowly dodging one of Samura's attacks, while one of the Makizumi began preparing a transport mandala for Hakuri and the two blade wielders to escape.[7]

Uruha, Samura and the two remaining Makizumi sorcerers continued fending off the tree branches and attacking sorcerers, Uruha noting the sorcerers were so focused on their killing they seemed almost brainwashed. In a brief lull, Uruha spotted the mandala and realised the Makizumi's intention to transport the three of them out, and thus used his hostile intent to guide Samura over the mandala so the Makizumi sorcerer could send the two wielders and Hakuri to the temple's entrance.

Samura was furious and immediately turned to reenter the temple, but Uruha stopped him, voicing that they had to take Hakuri and escape down the cliff under the cover of darkness, as that was the only victory achievable by the Makizumi, and emphasised the Makizumi were not simply throwing their lives away as tools. As they were fighting desperately to prevent the enemy from reaching them, they needed to honour them by surviving, because their lives as wielders were incredibly important. Not wanting to be lectured and still furious about his comrades' decision, Samura restated his desire to continue fighting but was interrupted by a severely bleeding Hakuri, who grabbed onto his hand and quickly registered him, summoning Tobimune.

With his blade in hand, Samura rushed into the temple and used Crow to eradicate the enemy sorcerers,[8] the Hishaku sorcerer quickly leaving. Uruha and Hakuri also entered the temple, Hakuri still bleeding but voicing his desire to transport Kumeyuri as well. The female Makizumi sorcerer urgently told him to avoid doing so, as he was running on pure adrenaline, and with Samura equipped with Tobimune they could resume the treatment at a different Sanso at their leisure.

Samura questioned whether everyone was alright, and the group moved around the temple, eventually seeing Fuura's condition, impaled by a beam after being attacked. Uruha asked about Fuura's background, and one of the Makizumi explained he was 22, had come to work there three years ago as his first assignment and had sent all of his earnings to his younger sister due to living at the temple having no cost. The Makizumi sorcerer emphasised Fuura had not died in vain, and that his sacrifice had led to a major turning point in the war conflict; though Samura disagreed, believing it was just the beginning.[9]

Samura knocked the entire group as well as every monk in the area unconscious, with the sole exception of Uruha. Samura explained to Uruha that even if they did recover the Enchanted Blades, the problem wouldn't be solved, as in that case Kunishige wouldn't have needed to lock away the blades. Samura noted while the Hishaku were vile, there was a greater evil; the wielders themselves and their heinous actions in the war, and now young individuals had died to protect people they thought to be 'heroes'.

Samura declares that he'll kill all five wielders, including himself

Samura proclaims his objective of the wielders' deaths

Samura declared that to prevent any further deaths, he would kill all five remaining blade wielders from the Seitei War, including himself. Uruha interrupted him, stating that the Hishaku would be able to use Kumeyuri with his death, and angrily shouted that Samura was allying with the organisation that killed Kunishige. Samura retorted he would only ally with them until the Master Swordsman was dead, and then kill them, preventing from doing harm with the blades while also tracking the blades down in the process. Samura maintained that only evil would be destroyed.

Despite his vehement opposition to Samura's plan, Uruha internally admitted it would be nigh-impossible for Samura to be defeated with Tobimune. Samura concluded that they would settle the Enchanted Blade matter away from the new generation, and while Uruha understood Samura's motives, he refused to simply throw away his life, spiting his comrades' deaths in service of himself. The two walked to a nearby bridge and Samura set Tobimune down, readying his normal katana instead as Uruha did the same. The two dashed past each other and Samura landed a devastating slash on Uruha, the latter falling to the ground. Accepting his defeat and death, Uruha weakly questioned if Samura would shoulder his burden alone. Samura set down his katana and retrieved Tobimune, and answered Uruha that only he would have to endure his hell. As Hakuri managed to transport Chihiro to the bridge, one last slash from Tobimune finished Uruha off.[10]

Abilities[]

Overall Abilities: As the former wielder of the Enchanted Blade Kumeyuri and a veteran combatant of the Seitei War, Uruha is a powerful individual. He is easily able to match sorcerers even without his Enchanted Blade, being able to perform extremely fast slashes and dispatch sorcerers with ease.[11]

Uruha has accomplished the first stage of spirit energy usage, being able to use his spirit energy to strengthen his body to superhuman levels. Due to having formed a Lifelong Contract with the Enchanted Blade Kumeyuri, he is unable to use sorcery.

Enhanced Reflexes: Uruha was able to react to a sorcerer crashing through the window while on a high-speed moving train.[12]

Enhanced Durability: Hiruhiko's Blood Crane sorcery, capable of cutting straight through a sorcerer's body, only caused minor bleeding to Uruha upon impaling him and did not seem to seriously impair him.[13]

Combat Prowess[]

Kumeyuri[]

Kumeyuri (酌揺 (くめゆり) Kumeyuri): One of the seven enchanted blades forged by Kunishige Rokuhira, Kumeyuri is a special katana infused with sorcery that possesses supernatural powers. Upon activation through calling Kumeyuri's name, two geisha-like entities emerge out of the blade and fly around the wielder. In the Seitei War, Uruha wielded Kumeyuri and assisted in achieving victory for Japan, and Uruha willingly returned the blade to Kunishige after the war's conclusion. After the Hishaku's attack on Senkutsuji Temple, Samura killed Uruha and nullified his contract with Kumeyuri, allowing Hiruhiko to become Kumeyuri's new wielder.
