Weekly Shōnen Jump (週刊少年ジャンプ,Shūkan Shōnen Janpu, often abbreviated as Shonen Jump), is a popular manga anthology published on a weekly basis in Japan by Shueisha as part of its Jump line of magazines. This magazine has a remarkable history, with its very first issue hitting the shelves on August 1, 1968. It's not only one of the longest-running manga magazines but also the best-selling one.
Overview[]
The content of Shonen Jump primarily targets young male readers in their teenage years. You can expect to find plenty of action-packed scenes along with a healthy dose of humor. The series featured in this magazine eventually get compiled into tankōbon volumes, which are released every two to three months under the "Jump Comics" label.
During the mid-1980s to the mid-1990s, Shonen Jump was at its peak, boasting a weekly circulation of 6.53 million copies and a total readership of 18 million in Japan. Since its inception in 1968, it has sold a staggering 7.5 billion copies, solidifying its status as the best-selling comic/manga magazine. Even in recent times, in 2019, it maintained a weekly circulation of over 1.6 million copies. Notably, many of the top-selling manga series have originated from the pages of Weekly Shonen Jump.
Shonen Jump played a significant role in shaping the manga industry, giving birth to the Jump magazine line and the Jump Comics imprint, which publishes tankōbon volumes. It also has sister magazines like Jump SQ (created after the discontinuation of Monthly Shonen Jump) and Saikyō Jump. Internationally, there have been counterparts like the North American Weekly Shonen Jump. Furthermore, it has inspired a vast crossover media franchise that includes anime and video games, bringing together various Shonen Jump characters.
