“If I were a real adult...I would have stopped him then, by force if necessary.” Shiba lamenting his failure to stop Chihiro from walking his path of revenge.[source]

Togo Shiba ( (しば) (とう) () Shiba Tōgo) is a major character in the manga series Kagurabachi. He is a sorcerer, an old friend of Kunishige Rokuhira, and a former member of the Kamunabi. Following Kunishige's death and the theft of his Enchanted Blades at the hands of the Hishaku, Shiba dedicates himself to assisting Kunishige's son Chihiro in his quest to recover the stolen Enchanted Blades and track down the Hishaku, making him Chihiro's oldest and closest ally.

He is a deuteragonist and one of Chihiro's major allies in the series as a whole.

Appearance

Togo Shiba Full Body

Shiba's full body appearance

Shiba is a tall and well-built man with long, blond hair that's neatly styled with a right-sided parting and a loose strand of bangs that he incorporates into his look. He also has thin eyebrows and black-colored eyes.

During his visits to the Rokuhira residence where Chihiro was still young, Shiba typically sports a semi-formal short-sleeved polo shirt with a chest pocket, paired with black pants.

In the present, Shiba is now on a quest with Chihiro to find the Hishaku. During this mission, he wears a white, long-sleeved polo shirt that he rolls up to his elbows, along with suspenders attached to his black pants. These suspenders are made of woven cloth and create a Y-shaped pattern at the back.

Personality

Shiba is an easygoing and laid-back individual, especially around his friends such as Kunishige, casually engaging in banter with them. Even in precarious situations such as when confronting Genichi Sojo and Kyora Sazanami, Shiba is able to maintain a casual exterior, while internally staying calm and observing the situation.

Despite his nonchalant demeanor, Shiba cares for Chihiro's wellbeing, offering advice on dealing with his personal grudge and displaying concern over his physical state after he exerts himself. When he intervened in Chihiro and Sojo's first duel, his first instinct was to move to Chihiro's side, even as Soshiro Azami warned him it would provoke Sojo.

Shiba is also resourceful, having spent a great deal of time in researching various factions and events such as the Korogumi Yakuza and the Rakuzaichi, ultimately to aid Chihiro in their mission. His practicality is also notable, seen when he wishes to assess the Korogumi Yakuza's reasonableness before engaging them in battle.

Against his enemies, Shiba has displayed a callous nature, breaking Norisaku Madoka's feet when he refused to divulge information, openly suggesting torturing Kyora Sazanami when he refused to cooperate and having zero hesitation to use his cigarette to burn Tenri Sazanami's eye.[3][4][5] He is not without some degree of mercy, willing to spare Enji Sazanami and Tamaki Sazanami after defeating them for the second time on the condition that they focus on re-educating the remaining members of the Sazanami Clan.[6]

Relationships

Allies

Kunishige Rokuhira

Shiba and Kunishige are old friends, having known each other since they were 18 years old. After helping Kunishige find a place to live safely after the Seitei War, Shiba frequently visited Kunishige and his son Chihiro, often engaging in casual banter with Kunishige and discussing news on the state of Japan. When Shiba talked about Kunishige's heroism in the Seitei War 15 years ago with Chihiro, he displayed a deep respect for him; though Kunishige himself grew reserved when the war was brought up.

When Kunishige was assassinated, Shiba was devastated at having failed to protect his life in spite of the safeguards he had personally set in place, and when mentioning the event later to Hinao appeared distraught. Even 3 years after Kunishige's assasination at the hands of the Hishaku, he still retains a sense of guilt about his failure to protect his life.

Chihiro Rokuhira

Being an old friend of Kunishige, Shiba and Chihiro frequently conversed during Shiba's visits to the Rokuhira household, and Shiba was approving of Chihiro's dream of becoming a swordsmith, expressing his belief that he would become just as skillful as his father.

Following Kunishige's murder, Shiba was immensely concerned about Chihiro's condition and was greatly regretful for not being able to reach the home in time to assist the Rokuhira family, a regret that continues to the present day.[7] Shiba would then go on to assist Chihiro on his mission to defeat the Hishaku and retrieve the Enchanted Blades, showing his support for Chihiro's goals. He gathers information useful to their cause, finds allies who can assist them and additionally helps Chihiro in direct combat at times.

Following Chihiro's encounter with Seiichi Samura, Shiba expressed deep concern for Chihiro, expressing regret for not being there to save him. Despite his fears, Shiba seemed to have enough respect for Chihiro's agency to allow him access to Enten despite the threat of death at the hands of Samura for wielding it, though this was not a decision free of guilt.

Internally, Shiba regrets having allowed Chihiro to embark on his path of revenge, and is apologetic to both Kunishige and Samura for letting Chihiro's hands become as bloodstained as their own.

Soshiro Azami

Shiba has known Azami for a long time, at least since they were 18. Like Azami, Shiba was formerly part of the Kamunabi, but has since departed due to finding their policies restrictive. While the two are no longer colleagues, they get along well enough, easily bantering upon meeting in Cafe Haru Haru and sharing information between them freely when dealing with Sojo and the Rakuzaichi. Azami has continued to supply information to Shiba and Chihiro out of support for Chihiro's objectives.

Hinao

Having known each other for a long time, Shiba and Hinao get along very well. Hinao casually flings job offers at him provides information. They seem to banter in a friendly manner. Shiba ultimately trusts Hinao enough to ask her to gather information on the Hishaku.

Hakuri Sazanami

After a brief period of mistrust, Shiba seems to have taken a liking to Hakuri, offering him ice cream after he realized Hakuri might have blamed himself for Enten being taken from Chihiro.[8] He also taught Hakuri the fundamentals of sorcery and how to use it.[9] Shiba is of the opinion that Hakuri has talent, and was impressed upon finding out his ability to use two types of sorcery.[10]

The even split of power between the Kamunabi and Hishaku

Shiba's notable presence in the balance of power

Overall Abilities: As a former member of the Kamunabi,[11] Shiba is a powerful sorcerer. Genichi Sojo expressed a great desire to fight him alongside Azami, stating that both men were "a problem" and fighting them would be "too much".[12] He was easily able to defeat Enji, Tamaki and Tenri, three members of the Sazanami Clan's elite forces known as the Tou, single-handedly.[13] According to Yura, the leader of the Hishaku, Shiba has reached the pinnacle of sorcery.[14]

As a sorcerer, Shiba has accomplished the first stage of spirit energy usage, being able to use his spirit energy to strengthen his body to superhuman levels. He also has a talent in teaching others, guiding Hakuri Sazanami to realize his own talent in sorcery.[15]

Enhanced Strength: Shiba has incredible physical strength. While interrogating Norisaku Madoka, he was easily able to break both of his feet with such force that it left cracks in the floor, and damaged one of his feet to the point of needing crutches.[16]

Enhanced Reflexes: While he mainly uses his teleportation ability to instantly move from one place to another, Shiba has incredible reflexes. He was able to dodge a powerful shockwave attack from Soya Sazanami while in midair.[17] He was also able to quickly react to a surprise attack from Enji despite being pressured by Tenri.[18]

Enhanced Durability: Shiba is an incredibly resilient man, remaining unfazed despite his arm being severely damaged by Tenri Sazanami while he was empowered by a piece of Datenseki.[19]

He has used this ability to quickly remove people from danger, such as teleporting Char Kyonagi into a car and one of the Korogumi's victims out of their base.[27][28] The maximum range of his teleportation is not known, though he was able to teleport from the Sazanami Estate to an apartment building in Tokyo in seconds, possibly indicating a maximum range of several kilometres.[29] His sorcery does not allow him to teleport into subspaces created by other people such as the Storehouse, effectively limiting his teleportation to the natural plane only.[30] He is also unable to teleport into areas heavily warded with seals, such as the Sazanami Clan's Naginojoen.[31]
