The Seitei War (
During the conflict, swordsmith Kunishige Rokuhira garnered fame for crafting the six Enchanted Blades that played a pivotal role in ending the war in favor of Japan, the war ending one year and five months after its beginning.[2][3]
In addition, the existence of sorcery and the activities of sorcerers were first exposed to the public during the Seitei War.[4] The government-aligned sorcerer organization known as the Kamunabi was founded around this time as well, having previously been known as the Counter-Sorcery Army.[5][6]
Overview[]
Islanders enter Japan.
The Seitei War began nineteen years ago when the islanders invaded the coasts of Japan as ordered by the royal family of the island's country.[7][8][9] Sorcerers from across Japan were called to arms,[10] exposing the existence of sorcery to the general public.[11] The Counter-Sorcery Army fought in the war at this time, an organization of sorcerers aligned with the government that used the standard army's ranking system. Over the course of the war, the Counter-Sorcery Army would shift into the Kamunabi.[12] Several members of the Masumi served the Counter-Sorcery Army, many clan members dying in the war.[13]
Despite forces from across the country gathering, Japan was slowly but surely losing until Kunishige Rokuhira forged the Enchanted Blades from a material discovered during the war and found only on the island, Datenseki.[14][15] These swords were the deciding factor in turning the tide of the war in Japan's favor, with the sixth blade Magatsumi renowned for paving Japan's path to victory and earning the acclaimed title of "Shinuchi".[16] Kunishige entrusted Magatsumi to his most trusted ally, Akemura Soga.[17]
After the Enchanted Blade wielders and the Japanese forces fought back the invasion and advanced onto the island, the islanders surrendered after deposing their royalty in order to prevent any further casualties, and a peace treaty was signed. However, over the course of the war, Soga had come to the conclusion the islanders needed to be annihilated based on his own beliefs, in order to protect the people of Japan.
Malediction; the greatest crime in modern history covered up as an act of heroism.
Soga's thoughts resonated with his blade, accessing the True Realm and using the technique Malediction to devastating effect, resulting in a calamity killing over 200,000 people, completely eradicating the entirety of the island nation's populace. It required the remaining five wielders to stop Soga after his rampage, upon which he was imprisoned deep underground.[18] Magatsumi's flowers, however, remained present on the island even to the present day.[19]
Aftermath[]
The war officially ended with an armistice on the 30th of September, celebrated to the present by people in Japan. Kunishige and the wielders of the Enchanted Blades were revered as national heroes, and this outlook would be taught in schools as well.[20][21]
In order to cover up Soga's genocide and ensure peace remained in Japan, the higher echelons within Japan spread word that the islanders were brutal, depraved savages that needed to be annihilated to safeguard the nation, and lifted up Soga on a pedestal as the 'Master Swordsman' for his devastating defeat of the "evil enemy".[22]
Public opinion demoralizing one of the nation's former protectors.
In light of the truth of the situation and in direct opposition to their public reputation, Kunishige and Samura do not view themselves as heroic whatsoever, with both rejecting the title.[23] Kunishige has been seen remorseful at times when the Seitei War is discussed and actively refuses to talk about most of the conflict with Chihiro, especially Soga or his blade Magatsumi, refusing to refer to it by its true name, likely due to the genocide perpetrated by the man who was once his closest ally.[24][25][26]
Samura is especially haunted by the actions he and the other blade wielders had committed during the war, with them having covered up their atrocities and failure to stop Soga afterwards. His long-running guilt eventually spiked once those who did not know the truth began dying to protect the wielders, and with prompting from Yura he cemented his goal; to kill the remaining Enchanted Blade wielders from the Seitei War and revive them using Suzaku so as to break their contracts, before killing Soga, so only Soga and himself would die.[27][28]
There are reportedly numerous individuals who viewed the wielders as killers for their actions in the war even without knowing the truth of Malediction; Yura would later take advantage of this to stir public distrust against the wielders through leaking information regarding Soga's massacre. Spurred on by this knowledge, numerous civilians would go as far as dumping trash and writing abusive messages on the walls of the Samura household.[29]
