Norisaku Madoka (
He is a minor antagonist in the Vs. Sojo Arc.
Appearance[]
Norisaku was a tall man with dark colored hair styled like a flat top, and wore large ring-like earrings. He discarded the earrings and flat-top hair cut after deciding to quit being a sorcerer. After he incurred severe injuries to his legs during Shiba's interrogation, his feet were heavily bandaged and he needed to use a stick as a makeshift crutch to move around.
Personality[]
Norisaku was a cruel individual with little value for human life, as shown by the fact that he killed a waiter with chopsticks just because he annoyed him.[1] During the battle with Chihiro, he emotionally attacked Char, audibly blaming her for the deaths of the people protecting her, particularly her mother, in an attempt to lure her out of hiding, without any thought of her mental wellbeing.[2] While being interrogated by Shiba, Norisaku was at first unwilling to reveal information regarding Sojo even after torture, showing his resilience and endurance.[3]
However, he wasn't a lost cause, and after Shiba pointed that out, Norisaku decided to quit being a sorcerer and change his ways. He sincerely apologized to his sister and didn't even expect her forgiveness, instead wanting to take his time to fix his mistakes and make up for them as much as he could.[4]
What hadn't changed, however, was his trait of jumping to conclusions and making rash decisions. Upon seeing his injured sister and being stabbed by Sojo, he immediately assumed that she was dead, choosing to use a suicide attack to take Sojo with him. However, not only did the plan fail, but as Sojo idly mused later, his sister was still alive and conscious. Sojo criticised Norisaku for being “half-assed at everything” and “not living through what he had already chosen”.[5]
Plot[]
Background[]
Sometime before the present, Norisaku became a sorcerer using his ability to create explosive Daruma. The negative connotation associated with his abilities caused his sister and mother to be viewed negatively as well, the family being known as the 'bomb monster family' before Norisaku's sister drove him out of the house. Norisaku then built up a reputation under the moniker of 'Daruma' after his sorcery, and according to himself he had never lost a fight until encountering Chihiro.[6]
After Char's escape, Genichi Sojo tasked Norisaku with locating and retrieving Char, specifying to be discrete.[7]
Vs. Sojo Arc[]
Norisaku found Char inside a soba shop where she was dining with Chihiro. He sat in the table next to them to observe them before killing a waiter with chopsticks due to annoying him and then confronting Chihiro and Char. Norisaku then called Invincible and summoned a Daruma which promptly exploded, blasting Chihiro outside the restaurant. Norisaku then tied up Char with a belt-rope attached to his wrist as he summoned more Daruma to engage Chihiro in battle.[8]
Chihiro immediately drew and activated Enten before using Kuro to sever the rope connected to Char. Norisaku took note of Enten's ranged slash using spirit energy and then saw Shiba teleport in, grab Char and move out, much to his aggravation. Norisaku demanded Chihiro hand over Char but Chihiro refused, preparing another Kuro. As Chihiro slashed forth, Norisaku recognised that rather than use spirit energy to create objects like he did, Chihiro's blade's attacks were comprised of spirit energy itself, much like another Enchanted Blade he had seen. Norisaku voiced his surprise at seeing another Enchanted Blade and expressed his excitement at being able to fight one, but as Chihiro pressed him for more info Norisaku arrogantly told Chihiro to defeat him first, thinking Enten's powers were underwhelming for seemingly being able to end wars.[9]
Norisaku then sensed Char's presence nearby and shouted at her, telling to give herself up before more people die meaninglessly to protect her, just like her mother. Norisaku sent many Daruma at Chihiro, obscuring him in a large explosion, as Norisaku told Char that she was alone once again. However, Chihiro then used Aka to absorb the explosions, protecting him. Norisaku was aggravated seeing the blade had multiple powers and quickly dodged out of the way of another Kuro, this one faster than the previous ones. Norisaku anxiously realised Chihiro had been holding back.[10]
As Chihiro readied another Kuro, Norisaku spotted the black sheen covering Enten and rapidly shot several Daruma below Chihiro, forcing him to leap upwards. Norisaku followed suit, jumping behind him and trapping him within his wrist-attached belt-ropes before preparing a point-blank Daruma. Chihiro then nonchalantly flipped his blade around and called Aka: Invincible, using the absorbed attack against Norisaku and blasting him back. The explosion also set off the Daruma that Norisaku had been forming, sending Norisaku flying into the ground. Chihiro walked up to Norisaku and grabbed his tie, asking him his boss's identity, his reasoning for going after Char and the location of the Enchanted Blade Cloud Gouger.[11]
Seeing Chihiro's hand was shaking, Shiba agreed to take over the interrogation process while Chihiro returned to Hinao's cafe.[12] Shiba took Norisaku to a warehouse and tied him to a chair using a seal attached to a rope to block Norisaku's access to his sorcery. Shiba asked about the Enchanted Blade Norisaku had seen, and while he initially played dumb Shiba then stepped on his foot with impact enough to shatter the floor beneath it into pieces, and causing severe damage to Norisaku's foot. Norisaku hesitantly revealed they would both be dead if he talked, and warned Shiba against opposing the powers behind him.[13]
After further interrogation, Shiba was able to learn that Norisaku worked for Genichi Sojo, a major underworld name and weapons dealer, and relayed the information to Chihiro.[14] Around this time, Genichi Sojo learnt of Norisaku's failure from one of his underlings who had been watching, and harshly criticised Norisaku for his lack of discretion, but found his loss to an Enchanted Blade fascinating, as it meant an enchanted blade not part of the original six existed.[7]
By the time Shiba finished his interrogation, Norisaku had revealed the location of Sojo's base and Sojo's possession of some Datenseki. By this time, Shiba had injured Norisaku's other foot, but not as severely as the first. Shiba then told Norisaku to start a new life, recognising the onset of regret in his eyes as Norisaku recalled his family. Shiba commented it was not too late for Norisaku to change if he could still feel remorse, and Norisaku internally realised Shiba had given him an amazing piece of advice.[6]
Norisaku returned to his residence and discarded his outfit as a sorcerer, ridding himself of his flat-top hairstyle as well. That evening, Norisaku thought back to his previous experience as a sorcerer and the subsequent shattering of his relationship with his family due to his chosen career path reflecting negatively on them, and decided to reconcile with them, first dialing his mother several times, then his sister after his mother failed to pick up. His sister initially moved to hang up, but Norisaku resolutely stated he was going to quit being a sorcerer and take steps to begin making things right. The two agreed to have Norisaku apologise to their mother first thing in the morning.[4]
As Norisaku walked using a stick to his sister's car, he decided his identity as 'Daruma' was dead, and that he would change from that day forward. As he thanked his sister upon entering the car, he stared in shock at the sight of her bloodied body. In the rearview mirror, Norisaku spotted Sojo sitting behind him, just as Sojo stabbed Cloud Gouger through the seat and Norisaku. Norisaku was brought to tears as he angrily cried out that his sister hadn't done anything, but Sojo replied those deaths were because of Norisaku's failure. At the mention of the plural 'deaths', Norisaku suddenly realised why his mother had not answered his calls last night, and froze in shock.[15]
He then summoned Daruma from much of his body as he prepared to take down Sojo with him, but as he prepared to detonate the Daruma Sojo used Yui to freeze him, leaving the car. Sojo mused how he had left Norisaku's sister alive, just unconscious, before muttering that Norisaku never finished anything properly, and should at least commit one measly lifetime to his path once he had begun walking it. Sojo sheathed Cloud Gouger, dispelling the ice covering Norisaku's body and causing Norisaku to detonate himself, his sister, and the car, as Sojo walked away without a change in his expression.[16]
Relationships[]
Familial[]
Unnamed Sister and Mother: Norisaku had a complicated relationship with his family. During a conversation with Shiba, it's revealed that his actions had brought shame to his family, leading them to be known as "the bomb monster family" due to his behavior. In a flashback triggered by Shiba's advice, Norisaku remembered his sister berating him, indicating that his actions had negatively impacted their family's reputation.
After this realization, Norisaku decided to quit being a sorcerer and reached out to his sister, feeling remorse for the burden he had placed on his family and wanting to make amends for his past actions. He intended to apologize to their mother in the morning, but when he entered his sister's car the next morning he discovered his sister's lifeless body in the front seat.
Genichi Sojo, who had been sitting in the back seat, claimed that all the deaths, including their mother's, were the consequences of Norisaku's failure to complete his task. This led to Norisaku preparing to blow himself up with large amounts of explosive Daruma in an attempt to kill Sojo along with him, in an attempt to atone for the consequences of his actions.
Abilities[]
Overall Abilities: Norisaku is a highly skilled sorcerer whose powerful offensive capabilities have rendered him unbeaten in battle until his loss to Chihiro. He was handpicked by Sojo to retrieve Char, who is central to Sojo's operation, indicating a high level of trust in Norisaku's ability to accomplish objectives. As a sorcerer, Norisaku has naturally accomplished the first stage of spirit energy usage, being able to use his spirit energy to strengthen his body to superhuman levels.
Enhanced Strength: Norisaku was easily able to jump several metres in the air in order to get behind Chihiro.
Enhanced Speed and Reflexes: Norisaku managed to dodge several of Chihiro's Kuro attacks, even when Chihiro began increasing their speed, and was able to aim Daruma dolls at Chihiro's position with pinpoint accuracy.
Sorcery[]
Explosive Daruma: Norisaku has the ability to create Daruma dolls from his body using spirit energy, which can explode whenever Norisaku wills them to. Norisaku has grown a reputation for using Daruma enough to the point where 'Daruma' has become his epithet.[17] In order to enter his Daruma-producing state, Norisaku must first state the command Invincible (
Norisaku can telekinetically manipulate his Daruma, having them float near him before launching them towards opponents, or simply blasting them at opponents as soon as they form from his hands. The explosions created by the Daruma are very powerful, the blast easily being several metres wide and powerful enough to cause severe property damage to buildings. Notably, Norisaku is not immune to his own explosions, taking severe damage from a misfire in his battle against Chihiro.
Equipment[]
Wrist-Attached Rope-Belts[]
Norisaku used rope-belts attached to his wrists to restrain Char after blasting Chihiro out of the restraurant, and also to restrain Chihiro in the air as he aimed a point-blank Daruma at him. Norisaku was seemingly able to telekinetically draw more out of his wrists and move them around in a limited range around himself.
