“It's Operation: Easy Does It. Let's get going!” ― Moku reassures Chihiro.[source]
Moku (
He is a major ally of Chihiro Rokuhira during the Sword Bearer Assassination Arc.
Appearance[]
Moku is a very tall (standing at over a head and a half taller than Chihiro) and broadly built young man with black hair and black eyes. He has a short, messy haircut and prominent eyebrows.
During his tenure at Senkutsuji Temple, he wore a large white apron over loose black-and-white robes. During his assignment to take action against the Hishaku's new ally, he wears a black suit, tie and pants and a white shirt.
Personality[]
Moku has a light-hearted and kind personality, ready to cheer-up people around him. He is the most openly emotional of the Masumi, voicing his worries about the infiltration of the Kokugoku Hot Spring,[1] and being visibly disturbed by Samura's betrayal.[2] He has a sense of humor as well, referring to Chihiro learning to leave some of his burdens for the Masumi as "Operation: Easy Does It".[3]
Despite his large size, he is gentle with his allies and works to ease their concerns. He carries the injured Hakuri after the Raid on Senkutsuji Temple[4] and feeds and massages Chihiro in an attempt to relax him during moments of perceived high stress.[5] As with the other Masumi, he has no qualms about sacrificing himself to protect and serve his chosen master.[6]
Relationships[]
Masumi[]
Ro[]
As fellow members of the Masumi, Moku and Ro are colleagues that place their trust in each other during operations. While Ro is his commander, the two have a dynamic similar to equals, Moku being unhesitant to throw off Ro's blanket when the latter was sleeping at an inopportune time. The two are extremely skilled at fighting together as a team.
Sumi[]
As fellow members of the Masumi, Moku and Sumi are colleagues that place their trust in each other during operations, and fight fluidly as a team.
Chihiro Rokuhira[]
Following Samura's betrayal, the Masumi chose Chihiro as their new master. Moku always try to brighten Chihiro's mind. During the discussion Moku and other Masumi fed Chihiro. When Chihiro wanted to catch up Kuguri, Moku reminded him of plan and said he can rely on them.
Hakuri Sazanami[]
Moku and other Masumi were thankful to Hakuri for saving their life by Hakuri registered Samura and transported Tobimune. After the raid Moku carried Hakuri on his back when they went to the Senkutsuji Temple's Eastern Gate.
The Masumi accepted Hakuri's request to loock out for Chihiro.
Seiichi Samura[]
Seiichi Samura was the Masumi's former chosen Master, given that he was the Enchanted Blade wielder they had been assigned to protect. Samura was vehemently against the idea of the Masumi constantly performing menial tasks for him and refused to view them as tools. Moku did not hesitate to risk his life fending off the Hishaku's forces during their attack on Senkutsuji in order to ensure Samura could get away safely.
For his part, Samura reluctantly agreed for the Masumi to fight near him given their abilities wouldn't risk Samura accidentally attacking them. He heavily disapproved of them risking their lives for him given his belief in his own guilt for his actions during the Seitei War, and was furious when he was transported away from the battle at Senkutsuji by Sumi, wanting to rush back in immediately.[7]
Following Samura's betrayal, Moku was shocked alongside the other members of the Masumi, wanting to find Samura and demand answers from him. He was ultimately unopposed to the idea of fighting his former ally.
Iori Samura[]
As the daughter of one of their chosen masters, Moku and the other Masumi are loyal and protective toward Iori, faking her death and sealing away her memories and identity prior to the series at Samura's request in hopes of protecting her from the consequences of being the child of such an infamous swordsman.[8]
In return, Iori is shown to be grateful for their protection but burdened by the idea people would willingly risk their lives to protect her, seeing it as her fault should they get hurt; in a manner similar in some respects to her father.[9]
Plot[]
Past[]
Three years prior to the present, Moku was assigned to Senkutsuji Temple alongside Ro and Sumi in order to guard Seiichi Samura. While originally they treated Samura as they would any other master, including attending to his supposed needs, Samura was heavily opposed to the idea of the Masumi doing everything for him and viewing themselves as tools, preferring them to work alongside him rather than for him. Samura additionally noted his total disapproval for the idea of the Masumi sacrificing their lives for him.[10]
Two years ago, Samura made his sole explicit request as master for the Masumi, to fake his daughter Iori's death and wipe her memory of any ties with himself, in order to move her away from the Kamunabi's surveillance and ensure she lived a life of safety.[11]
