The Masumi ( () (すみ) Masumi) are a clan of ninja that have existed for centuries. The Masumi support the Kamunabi in the present, as they had done with the Kamunabi's precursor organisation during the Seitei War. Three members were assigned to protecting Seiichi Samura at Senkutsji Temple, and after the events at the temple on the 9th of November, they are now allied to Chihiro Rokuhira.

They serve as key supporting allies during the Sword Bearer Assassination Arc.

Strength[]

The Masumi sorcerers' invisibility on Samura's battlefield

The Masumi's invisibility on Samura's battlefield.

Being a clan of trained ninja, the Masumi are powerful combatants that primarily operate using sorcery-associated items, and have knowledge of various sorcery-related spells. In standard combat, Masumi members Ro, Sumi and Moku use dual katana, and have enough skill with the weapons to hold off an onslaught of tree branches and Datenseki-wielding sorcerers for a noticeable amount of time.[1] Their speed is also notable, Ro and Moku having caught up to a bus and saved the passengers within after the vehicle was bisected by Kuguri.[2]

Sorcerers of the Masumi clan have trained to cloak their scent, sound and hostile presence in combat; making them the ideal choice to be assigned to Senkutsuji Temple in order to safeguard Tobimune wielder Seiichi Samura.

The Masumi had a treatment room set up within Senkutsuji designed to assist sorcerers with exhausted sorcery recover their abilities faster; here, Sumi aimed to help Hakuri accelerate the recovery process from several days to 30 minutes.[3]

One set of items used by multiple members of the Masumi consist of markers used to draw mandalas on the ground, which can transport four individuals to a specific location when activated using a hand sign, the mandala disappearing in a flash of black afterwards. Moku and Sumi used one to bring Uruha and Hakuri directly to Senkutsuji from a nearby train station, and later Sumi drew one to transport Samura, Uruha and Hakuri away from the battle at Senkutsuji.[4][5] Ro has also used one to bring his allies away from Kuguri and directly to the Kyoto Bloodshed Hotel.[6]

Among the spells the Masumi have available to them, the range varies from the comparatively basic sealing of objects within scrolls, Sumi carrying a motorbike sealed within a scroll on her person,[7] to a highly complex spell layout designed to render an individual impossible to be recognised by anyone other than the Masumi; including the subject themselves. The latter was used on Iori Samura at her father's request in hopes to ensure her a safe life,[8] and after Iori began subconsciously breaking the seal the Masumi planned a second, stronger seal. Due to the strength of the memory seal, the Masumi borrowed the Kyoto Bloodshed Hotel's barrier lantern to use as a power source.[9] Sumi was apparently capable of tracking the seal's effect after the seal was constructed.[10]

Sorcerous abilities and equipment aside, the Masumi also utilise various pieces of conventional weaponry, Ro in particular having used smoke grenades to obscure his position[11] and thrown shurikens with explosives attached with devastating accuracy, hitting a moving car and killing its driver.[12]

History[]

Past[]

The Masumi is a ninja family with a history spanning back centuries. Their objective has always been to protect the individual they serve.

During the Seitei War they aligned themselves with the faction that served as the precursor to the Kamunabi. Almost all the Masumi died during the war.[13] After its completion, they became an official sub-unit of the Kamunabi.

Three years before the present and fifteen years after the Seitei War, following Kunishige Rokuhira and Misaka's murders at the hands of the Hishaku, Samura was transferred to Senkutsuji Temple, one of the Sanso, and the Masumi were assigned there as a guard force by the Kamunabi.[14][15].

Over two years before the present Samura had the Masumi fake his daughter Iori's death. He hated that his daughter had to endure her freedom being restricted and he didn't want the Kamunabi to use her against him as a hostage. Under Samura's commands, the Masumi used sorcery to ensure it was impossible for anyone, including Iori herself, to realise her lineage, in order to ensure she would live a life of safety.[16]

Sword Bearer Assassination Arc[]

Hakuri and Uruha are teleported to the Senkutsuji Temple

The company teleports to the Senkutsuji.

When Uruha and Hakuri got off the train at a station near Senkutsuji, Sumi and Moku greeted them and used a Mandala to teleport the four of them to Senkutsuji Temple. Samura began to ask where Chihiro was before suddenly hearing a nearby priest bang a hammer on a drum as a signal, informing Samura the enemy, several sorcerers with Datenseki, were approaching. Samura immediately shouted for the forces to mobilise and Sumi ushered Hakuri to a room to begin treatment for his sorcery to recover more quickly. She informed Samura they would need 30 minutes to recover Hakuri's sorcery, and he drew his sword, stating it wouldn't be a problem.[17]

During the battle, the fedora-wearing Hishaku sorcerer also joined the attack on Senkutsuji, creating a litany of giant tree branches that devastated the building Samura was in. Sumi and Moku woke up their commander Ro. The Masumi arrived to the battlefield, using their unique ability to nullify their sound, smell and presence to avoid interfering with Samura's senses, the four fighting together to combat the enemy forces. Hakuri and Uruha soon arrived in the area, their escape route having been obstructed by Datenseki-wielding sorcerers. The enemy forces continued to attack, and Samura redoubled his determination to eliminate them. To the side, Uruha and the Masumi sorcerers recognised how Samura would oppose the notion of being evacuated from the area, and they quickly devised a plan to get Samura out of the area. As the building began crumbling from the Hishaku sorcerer's inflicted damage, Samura reacted to another sense of bloodlust, slicing forward. His blade was parried by Uruha, who had lured him onto a transport mandala Sumi had set up. Sumi immediately sent Samura, Uruha and Hakuri to the outskirts of the temple, thanking Uruha.

Samura Crow

Samura saves the Masumi.

Samura immediately turned to re-enter the temple, furious at the idea of leaving his comrades to sacrifice themselves. Uruha responded that they needed to take Hakuri and flee under the cover of darkness, emphasising that the Masumi were not throwing away their lives as tools but fighting to prevent the Hishaku from reaching them, because their lives were gravely important. Samura's brow creased as he replied that he didn't need to be lectured at the moment, but the two were interrupted as Hakuri grabbed onto Samura's hand, rapidly registering him and transporting Tobimune to Samura. Samura activated the blade, calling its name, before calling Crow and shredding back into the temple in a flock of feathers, rapidly defeating the Datenseki-wielding sorcerers and shouting to the Masumi that they were fired.[18]

As the fedora-wearing Hishaku sorcerer teleported away, the Masumi trio apologised for Samura needing to save them, and Samura told them to thank Hakuri instead. Uruha and Hakuri arrived, and with the Masumi they planned to head to another Sanso to finalise Hakuri's treatment and resume the plan to retrieve the Enchanted Blades. Samura then voiced his concerns whether everyone was alright, and the group moved around the temple, eventually seeing Fuura's condition, impaled by a wooden beam. While Sumi told Uruha about Fuura, Samura grit his teeth at the 'sight'. Sumi noted his death was not in vain, and that his protection of the wielders would lead to a major turning point in the conflict against the Hishaku going forward. Samura disagreed, noting unfortunately that it was just the beginning.[19] Samura knocked the entire group as well as every monk in the area unconscious, with the sole exception of Uruha. Samura announced his intention to take the lives of all sword bearers including himself and killed Uruha in a duel.[20]

Chihiro and the Masumi assemble

Chihiro and the Masumi team up.

Later Ro came to Chihiro and told about Hakuri state and his request to them to look out for Chihiro. Ro also said Samura's betrayal shocked and upset them greatly, so much they team up with Chihiro to confront their wayward ex-master.[21] After couple of days the Masumi and Chihiro discussed about the three-way deadlock between the Kamunabi, Hishaku and Samura and ask Chihiro to not to draw Enten. The Masumi told Chihiro about faking Iori's death since Hishaku can break the deadlock by taking her as a hostage.[22]

To prevent this, they came to Kyoto where Iori lived. They interrupted the Hishaku, who were already in Iori's class and took Iori away. Sumi was surprised that the seal started breaking down. Ro was impressed that Iori maybe unconsciously breaks the seal and thought Samura underestimates young people. Ro told Iori that they'll explain later and that's her life is going to be different for a while.[23]

Sumi summoned a motorbike with a katana and with Iori they left the school. They were chased by the Hishaku duo when Ro threw two shurikens to them, killing the driver and flipping the car. When Kuguri sliced a bus on the road, Ro and Moku saved the bus passengers. When Kuguri was about to kill Iori Sumi drifted away and delivered Chihiro the katana by pushing a button.[24]

Chihiro held off Kuguri long enough for Ro to draw a mandala on the ground. Ro called to Chihiro and used a smoke bomb to obscure the mandala long enough for Ro, Moku and Chihiro to make their getaway. The trio then met with Sumi and Iori at the Kyoto Bloodshed Hotel, booking the Pine Room. Before talking to Iori, Ro noted Iori's subconscious bond with Samura was strong enough to begin breaking the seal itself with the right prompting, so they should avoid mentioning Samura at all costs. He added they were preparing a stronger seal to fully amnesticise Iori, set to be completed within 24 hours.

Upon meeting with Iori, Ro introduced the Masumi and attempted to paint a more positive picture of Chihiro, but the latter resolutely accepted he was a murderer, but he would protect Iori nonetheless. Iori was adamant that they explain the truth and who Samura was, and Ro revealed the Masumi had manipulated her memories for her own safety, advising her that hostile forces would pursue her and her sealed memories may not be pleasant.

Hearing Iori's dissatisfaction and discomfort at being denied the truth and pondering how he would feel without having lived with his father, Chihiro proposed they tell Iori the truth as she would be amnesticised in 24 hours anyway, leaving the choice up to Iori herself, an argument Ro could not counter.[25] As Ro and Chihiro began telling her the truth behind her lineage, Ro offered snacks to her. When Iori later collapsed from the shock of the onrush of information, Ro and Chihiro placed her in a bed.[26]

Throughout the night, the Masumi taught Chihiro battle techniques. By the time morning rose on the 14th of November, Masumi were on the roof on the final stages of preparing the seal.[27] Then Ro headed down an elevator to Iori's floor, seeing a group of yakuza approaching Iori. Ro quickly dispatched the yakuza and the two began making their way to the roof, Ro assuring Iori that the seal would haze over the events of the prior days in regards to her acquaintances at school; though those who died could not be brought back. While Iori was quick to succumb to her guilt and blame herself, Ro interrupted and stated it was the Masumi's fault for constructing an improper seal; this time, with proper knowledge of family dynamics, they could ensure the seal would not be broken.

Ro added that the only thing needed to activate the seal was the key for the hotel's barrier-powering lantern on the roof, which the Masumi had acquired permission to use as a power source. After Iori told him that Chihiro had headed downstairs, Ro had confidence he would get the key back to them. Ro asked Iori once again if she had decided for sure that she would return to school, and after some thinking Iori shakily replied in the affirmative.[28]

Moku greets them as they arrive on the rooftop, asking about Chihiro. Ro replies that with manager dead, Chihiro was retrieving the key. He turns to Iori, stating they will activate the seal and return Iori to her regular life as soon as Chihiro arrives with the key. They were interrupted by Kuguri's arrival in an elevator, Ro quickly locking blades with him.

Ro mockingly states the Hishaku's financial state must be poor if they are hiring yakuza of little renown, and Kuguri brushes off the remark, commenting the Masumi would be in trouble. The abnormally-behaving yakuza scream that they will reach Samura's daughter, and Sumi is quick to fend them off and console a terrified Iori.[29]

Masumi Character Reading Illustration

An illustration of Ro by Hokazono spelling out the Masumi's correct reading.

  • The Masumi's name was written as Makizumi in Chapters 55 and 56 in both the Japanese and English versions of the manga. Takeru Hokazono noted this was a mistake and this reading was later changed to Masumi.
