Magatsumi (
Overview[]
Magatsumi was forged in response to the Seitei War over 18 years ago, as a weapon to assist Japan in the war effort, and the most powerful of the six Enchanted Blades. Due to this power, Kunishige chose his most trusted comrade, Akemura Soga, to wield it. After a peace treaty was signed between Japan and the island nation, Soga, believing the islanders needed to be destroyed in order to protect Japan, resonated his desire to annihilate the islanders with Magatsumi, accessing the True Realm and using the technique Malediction to commit genocide. Soga was later defeated by the other five Enchanted Blade wielders and locked up in the dungeon of the lowest level of Kamunabi Headquarters.
Before Magatsumi was returned to Kunishige alongside the other Enchanted Blades and Kunishige went into hiding, Kasen, Ichiki and Yatsuru constructed a seal on the box Magatsumi was kept in. Kunishige felt a deep sense of guilt for the atrocity his creation had caused, and tried on numerous occasions to destroy Magatsumi, but none of them worked.
Three years ago, the Hishaku attacked the Rokuhira residence, and the Hishaku Sorcerer, Uran and Hokuto's puppet killed Kunishige and stole the six Enchanted Blades. Yura immediately began working on breaking the seal, taking three years to do so. After the seal was broken, Yura channeled some of his spirit energy into the blade but did not display a strong desire to wield the blade just yet. The Hishaku submitted Magatsumi to the Rakuzaichi in order to see how Soga would react to someone trying to use Magatsumi.
After taking a lethal wound, Kyora Sazanami used Magatsumi to defend the Rakuzaichi, Soga activating the blade and attempting to invade Kyora's mind. While he eventually died, he was largely able to fend off the fend off Soga's mental invasion and die as himself, though the degree to which his mind was strained was reflected in his Storehouse fragmenting. Chihiro retrieved Magatsumi and gave it to the Kamunabi afterwards, where it was inspected (with one of the three inspectors covering up the presence of Yura's spirit energy) and sealed.
During the Hishaku's attack on Kamunabi Headquarters, Yura tapped into the spirit energy he had channeled within Magatsumi and desired to use the blade. Soga attempted to stand up and activated the blade, shadows forming over Yura's eyes as he began using Magatsumi's abilities. While Soga initially attempted to invade Yura's mind much as he did Kyora's, he withdrew his invasion after coming to the conclusion that he could let Yura approach him in order to ask him about the outside. When Yura reached directly above Soga's prison, Magatsumi emerged from a flower before Yura.
Abilities[]
A butterfly manifested by Magatsumi imbues itself within Kyora's hand.
As an Enchanted Blade, Magatsumi is a katana constructed from Datenseki. Magatsumi is activated by calling its name, which causes flowers to bloom in the vicinity of the blade's activation. As with all Enchanted Blades, Magatsumi amplifies the spirit energy inside its bearer to such an extent that it can no longer be contained inside the bearer's body, and instead concentrates into a mass of spirit energy.
Magatsumi manifests spirit energy in the form of flowers, butterflies and various arthropods. In order for the flower fields to spawn, Magatsumi first exudes a black liquid from the blade which drips to the ground and darkens it, flowers forming from the darkened ground.[1] Magatsumi's proxy wielders can generate the flower fields even separate from the blade; Yura was able to summon flower fields around himself despite Magatsumi being separate from him at the time.[2] Magatsumi itself can be drawn from the flower fields, the blade arising from within the flower fields for its wielder or proxy wielder to take.[3]
The flower fields summoned by Magatsumi are lethal. If a person makes contact with the flower field, flowers and branches begin to grow out of their skin and mouth, killing them from the inside out.[4] Sorcerers are able to resist the flower growth to an extent, slowing its advance within their body.[5]
Uniquely, Magatsumi can bypass its Lifelong Contract and allow other people to use Magatsumi despite not being the holder of its Lifelong Contract. A person must first imbue spirit energy within Magatsumi and then display a strong desire to use the blade. Should these criteria be met, the person will be able to use Magatsumi's abilities for a limited time as soon as the blade's original wielder activates Magatsumi.[6] This has been visually represented through a butterfly of spirit energy imbuing itself within the proxy wielder.[7]
In addition, once this happens, Magatsumi's original wielder will be able to attempt to possess or take control over the other person, though this can be staved off for some time with sufficient mental fortitude. This possession is represented by shadows forming over the eyes of Magatsumi's wielder and proxy wielder, which lighten and darken to reflect the possession weakening or strengthening. If the original wielder ceases their possession attempts, however, the shadows will stay dark. The possession is also evident through vines and roots burrowing in and out of the skin of the proxy wielder, the presence of these flowers increasing or decreasing in accordance with the possession status.
The mental connection between Magatsumi's original wielder and proxy wielder allows the two to communicate even at a distance, as seen when Yura communicated with Soga from the top of the Dungeon.[8]
Even with its sheath on, Magatsumi created a slicing sound as it collided with Enten, indicating it can cut even without being unsheathed.[9]
Magatsumi is the only Enchanted Blade among the seven to not have three primary abilities.[10] Of the ones seen thus far:
- Spider: Freezes targets in place, preventing them from moving.
- Dragonfly: Fires a blast forward that severely damages targets hit and expands the flower field in a specific direction.
- Centipede: Launches a powerful blast in all directions around the user.

Dragonfly[]
Dragonfly (
When Magatsumi was remotely activated by Yura, his use of Dragonfly formed the dragonfly wings around his arm, and no flowers were summoned on the ground. The attack was able to greatly damage Azami's forearms and hands, though he was still able to deliver a devastating punch to Yura not long afterwards.[16] Later, Yura pointed two fingers and formed Dragonfly around them, releasing a more pinpoint blast that blew off Azami's right arm.[17]
Centipede[]
Centipede (
Centipede is not without its limitations; it has a cooldown period after use where the centipede construct can be formed but its blast not unleashed. In addition, Centipede's blast does not perfectly cover all directions; the area behind the wielder is left largely intact.[21]
Soga has used a Centipede construct to hold Magatsumi aloft without physically touching it.[22]
