The Kyoto Bloodshed Hotel (京都 (きょうと) (さつ) (りく) ホテル Kyōto Satsuriku Hoteru) is a 35-floor hotel within Kyoto catered to housing members of the Kyoto underworld.[1] Its general manager was Yojiro Sengoku, who mentored his staff in the Reigen One-Sword Style; a style passed down through the hotel for the last 150 years.[2][3]

On the night of the 13th of November, the hotel was attacked by the Hishaku in pursuit of Iori Samura, and one member Hiruhiko killed Sengoku and a majority of the staff.

It is a major setting of the Sword Bearer Assassination Arc.

Description[]

Due to serving as secure ground for the criminal groups of Kyoto, the Kyoto Bloodshed Hotel is a securely regulated location. For roughly 150 years the Reigen One-Sword Style has been passed down the hotel's history, with the current general manager Sengoku being the most recent master of the style. Sengoku trains over 50 disciples, who make up the hotel's staff and have trained in the style for years.[4][5][6]

The hotel enforces several rules to maintain order, chief among them the express forbidding of any use of sorcery within the hotel with the exception of the roof, in order to ensure the various underworld groups do not engage each other.[7] For the security of those within, the hotel is equipped with a barrier that prevents external detection sorcery from locating anyone within.[8]

The hotel's exterior somewhat resembles a pagoda. The hotel's first floor consists of a standard lobby, with several couches placed for guests to sit on and a large tree. Sengoku typically stations the front desk here, greeting guests and allocating them rooms. Elevators connect the various floors.

The upper floors are lined with hallways with standard rooms spaced between them. During the Masumi, Iori and Chihiro's stay, they booked a room named the Pine Room.

The roof, considered the 35th floor of the hotel, is an active construction site, Sengoku having been planning to further expand the hotel upwards. The lantern that powers the hotel's detection-preventing barrier is located here, and control over it is regulated to a key that is typically in Sengoku's possession. On the 13th of November, the Masumi negotiated with Sengoku to use the key and lantern temporarily as a power source for the new seal on Iori's memories.

History[]

Past[]

The Kyoto Bloodshed Hotel has existed for over 150 years, and the Reigen One-Sword Style has been passed down the staff of the hotel throughout the hotel's history.[9]

Sengoku had served as General Manager of the Kyoto Bloodshed Hotel and was a master of the Reigen One-Sword Style for at least 7 years, training over 50 disciples over that time. One of his teachings stated that there were no such thing as geniuses and diligence and consistent effort would triumph over all.[10][11]

Sword Bearer Assassination Arc[]

Yojiro checks the Masumi, Chihiro, and Iori into the hotel

Sengoku greets Sumi and Iori.

On the 13th of November, Sumi and Iori had made their way to the Kyoto Bloodshed Hotel, where Sumi greeted the general manager Yojiro Sengoku and briefly noted the hotel's continuing construction upwards. Ro, Moku, Sumi, Chihiro and Iori then reconvened within the hotel's Pine Room.

Ro revealed to Iori that the Masumi had manipulated her memories. Hearing Iori's dissatisfaction and discomfort at being denied the truth and pondering how he would feel without having lived with his father, Chihiro proposed they tell Iori the truth as she would be amnesticised within 24 hours anyway, leaving the choice up to Iori herself.[12]

As Ro and Chihiro began telling her the truth behind her lineage, Ro offered snacks to her. When Iori later collapsed from the shock of the onrush of information, Chihiro and Ro placed her in a bed. Meanwhile, Sumi and Moku ascended to the roof and began preparing the first stages of the seal.[13]

Throughout the night, the Masumi rotated between teaching Chihiro battle techniques, working on the seal and watching over Iori.[14] Ro asked Sengoku if he could borrow the hotel's barrier lantern as a power source for the memory seal that would be placed on Iori, and Sengoku agreed to hand over the key so long as it was only temporary.[15]

Sometime later in the night, Sengoku observed Toto within the lobby, who raised her hand and summoned Hiruhiko within the building. A hotel staff member walked over and reminded them that sorcery was prohibited within the hotel, but was swiftly killed by Hiruhiko using only a hairpin. Hiruhiko tied back his hair and grabbed the staff member's sword, planning to use the hotel staff as a method of improving his swordsmanship. The nearby hotel staff including Sengoku then prepared to engage Hiruhiko.[16]

Hiruhiko kills Sengoku

Sengoku managed to knock Hiruhiko back with his first few attacks, but Hiruhiko implemented an unorthodox tactic that managed to sever Sengoku's left arm, Sengoku mutedly noting the injury and the various hotel staff shocked. Slightly curious, Sengoku questioned who Hiruhiko had studied under. Criticising the notion of being anyone's disciple, Hiruhiko replied that he was a student of freedom.[17] Using his new style of swordsmanship, Hiruhiko was then able to kill Sengoku before eliminating the remainder of the staff present.[18] After reconvening with Toto, the two figured out Iori was in the building and Toto instructed Hiruhiko to head upstairs and capture her alive while she called for reinforcements, overheard by a listening Ikura.[19] Hiruhiko complied and headed to an elevator.

By the time morning rose on the 14th of November, Ro was on the roof with Sumi and Moku on the final stages of preparing the seal.[20] When Iori woke up, Chihiro was in the room. The door rang and Chihiro opened it and killed the yakuza member there. Seeing more yakuza in the hallway, Chihiro systematically dispatched the yakuza before calling Iori out, Chihiro hitting the elevator button. The elevator door opened to reveal Hiruhiko, standing with Sengoku's severed head in hand.[21]

Chihiro and Hiruhiko clash once again.

Chihiro forced Hiruhiko into a nearby elevator and cut the wire, the elevator plunging down to the first floor. More yakuza emerged in the hall, but the elevator nearby opened to reveal Ro, who quickly killed the yakuza and began escorting Iori to the roof. Upon reaching the roof, Ro asked Iori on her choice. After pondering how she not only wanted to turn her back on the horrific nature of the truth, but her father seemed fine with forgetting her, she mused over how she was the only one feeling emotional loss. She then hesitantly told Ro she had made her decision and wished to return.

As Chihiro landed, a nearby defeated staff member handing Chihiro the key to the hotel's lantern and noting Hiruhiko's swordsmanship seemed invisible. Having observed Hiruhiko's movement in detail, Chihiro realised Hiruhiko's style inherently revolved around not following a pattern and was able to track Hiruhiko's sword and parry it, Hiruhiko surprised at Chihiro's skill.[22] Abruptly, Ikura showed up, yelling that he was here to save Iori and didn't care what kind of scars he had to incur in order to do so. Hiruhiko was annoyed by someone interrupting the fight and slashed towards him, but Chihiro blocked the attack and gave Ikura the key, telling him to head upstairs.[23]

Ro and Iori arrived at the roof and were interrupted by Kuguri's arrival in an elevator and a horde of seemingly-brainwashed yakuza attacking from the outside, while the hotel's clientele began arriving from the elevators. Later, Ikura appeared in an elevator, and Ro was surprised to see he had the key, right before Iori fully broke the seal and began fending off several of the yakuza with a katana.[24]

Chihiro defeats Hiruhiko once again

Chihiro defeats Hiruhiko for the second time.

Downstairs, Hiruhiko saw Chihiro's continuous use of stances and mocked the concept of tradition and mimicked Chihiro's Iai White Purity Style stance. Testing the stance, Hiruhiko pushed off the wall and slashed down with speed, Chihiro realising in shock that Hiruhiko's endeavour was successful. Hiruhiko and Chihiro entered elevators and ascended to the roof. As the two elevators opened at the roof, the two dashed towards each other using the style's extreme speed; though Chihiro, after seeing Iori's usage of the style, was able to utilise the style better and slashed down Hiruhiko, severing his blade in two.[25]

Tobimune Wings

Samura arrives.

Ro immediately recognised Iori had broken the seal on her memories as he continued fighting the yakuza. After Iori voiced that she wanted to see her father, Chihiro unsheathed Enten and a nearby Hiruhiko (teleported to a nearby ledge by Toto) activated Kumeyuri. Immediately, Owl disappeared overhead and Samura arrived with Tobimune activated, two gigantic black wings keeping him aloft.[26]

Samura used Crow as Hiruhiko called Banquet, before Samura quickly decapitated Hiruhiko and Toto and picked up Kumeyuri. The group were then interrupted as Banquet's effects came in full force, Hiruhiko and Toto's bodies as well as Kumeyuri melting away while the building appeared to move nauseously around them. While the Masumi, Samura, Iori, Ikura and Chihiro were affected, the yakuza were not, and they began to pursue Iori once again. Chihiro yelled at Samura to protect his daughter before turning to pursue Hiruhiko. Samura then swiftly cut down the attackers approaching Iori.

Within the building, Hiruhiko commented that Kumeyuri was incredibly useful, and still wanted to continue his fight with Chihiro to Toto's consternation. Chihiro then charged in and locked blades with Hiruhiko, Toto knocked aside.[27]
