Kazane Machi (
He is a supporting ally in the Vs. Sojo Arc.
Appearance[]
Kazane has light colored hair on top with his natural black hair seen on his sides. He is among the shorter members of the squad, standing about a head shorter than his captain Ikuto. Following his squad's battle against Sojo, his right arm was severed and his right eye was injured, with a metallic shoulder replacement implemented.
Personality[]
Kazane tends to come across as aloof and unapproachable, particularly towards younger individuals with potential like Chihiro. During meetings between his squad and Chihiro, he was often snarky and didn't speak much, criticising Chihiro's knowledge on one occasion, though his teammates quickly excused him. During their confrontation with Sojo, Kazane was far more serious, focusing solely on the battle and expressing concern that he could not help as directly as his comrades.
Following his battle with Sojo, Kazane was distraught, developing a deep disdain for the Enchanted Blades' existence given the devastation they had wrought and the personal loss he had incurred. He included Chihiro in his report on the situation, though due to his respect for Azami refrained from including Azami and Chihiro's relation.
Relationships[]
Anti-Cloud Gouger Special Forces[]
In general, Kazane is on good terms with his squadmates. In his recollection, the squad were seen smiling warmly at him, indicating a favourable relationship.
Ikuto Hagiwara[]
As his captain, Kazane worked under Ikuto and stood by his commands during operations. For his part, despite Kazane being new to the squad, Ikuto holds trust in him like any other member, and included Kazane's sorcery as a backup plan against Sojo.
Shiyumi Harima[]
During their fight against Sojo, Kazane was assigned to protect Shiyumi far away from the combat zone. Shiyumi entrusted him to protect her, displaying her belief in the younger sorcerer. When Kazane was worried about his comrades fighting Sojo and wanted to join them, Shiyumi calmly reminded him of his duty, and coaxed him to stay by reminding him that he was their 'secret weapon'.
Hajime Kugara[]
Kugara frequently bugged Kazane when he felt he was acting 'jerky', getting up close and personal with him and generally leaving Kazane irritated at being manhandled.
Kiyohiko Uzuki[]
When Kazane spoke up against Chihiro, Uzuki was quick to explain or otherwise brush over his words in favour of continuing rational discussion.
Soshiro Azami[]
As his senior officer, Kazane respects Azami's authority. Following his squad's battle with Sojo, Kazane left out any relation between Azami and Chihiro on his report out of respect for Azami.
Chihiro Rokuhira[]
Upon first meeting him, Kazane was against Chihiro when he attempted to join the operation, and later derided the basic level of Chihiro's information when Chihiro had only just started explaining Cloud Gouger's abilities. His opposition to Chihiro may have stemmed from the fact that Chihiro was a younger individual with potential, which Kazane disliked.
Genichi Sojo[]
Kazane and his squad were assembled in order to combat Genichi Sojo and his Enchanted Blade Cloud Gouger. After Sojo devastated his squad, Kazane developed a deep disdain for the Enchanted Blades and the harm they could inflict, believing they should not be allowed to exist in the first place.
Plot[]
Vs. Sojo Arc[]
On the 7th of October, when Genichi Sojo and Chihiro Rokuhira were fighting in the streets, the other members of his squad as well as Togo Shiba and Azami arrived on scene, but Kazane was not present.[1]
Within five days afterwards, Kazane and the Anti-Cloud Gouger Special Forces investigated the site of Sojo's base as reported by Norisaku Madoka through Shiba's interrogation, but Sojo had already evacuated it.[2]
Five days after their encounter with Sojo, on the 12th of October, Kazane and his squadmates (barring Makoto Kasahara, who was searching for the location of Sojo's newest base), met with Chihiro at Azami's request. While Ikuto requested for info on Cloud Gouger to refine their strategy for dealing with him, Kazane was angered upon hearing of Chihiro's desire to join their operation, unwilling to accept the idea of Chihiro getting special treatment. Uzuki excused him, explaining to Chihiro that Kazane's attitude shifted more aggressive when he saw young individuals with potential. Kugara later rested his arm on Kazane's shoulder and asked if he was feeling upset, annoying him.[3]
After Ikuto made a deal with Chihiro as to how they would approach Sojo, the group moved to the hospital's roof. Chihiro told them of Cloud Gouger's three abilities and when Kazane snarked that the information was basic, Uzuki told Chihiro to simply continue and Kugara continued bugging Kazane. The male Kamunabi members present later took a collective bathroom break, and Chihiro followed in order to continue the discussion. Like his colleagues, Kazane was confused when Chihiro told them they needed to let Sojo hit them with the Kou-Mei combination attack. Chihiro then elaborated they needed to let Sojo buy time to perform a fully-charged Mei, as it would leave Sojo wide open.[4]
More than 49 hours afterwards, on the 14th of October, all six members of the Anti-Cloud Gouger Special Forces would confront Sojo as he exited a bathhouse.[5] Shiyumi Harima sent pieces of the ground into the air and moved them towards the ocean to create an airborne battlefield and prevent damage to civilians, while Kazane protected her as she did so, keeping track of their position.[6] As his squadmates fought, Kazane expressed regret that he couldn't help, and Shiyumi reminded him that he was their secret weapon.[7]
Ikuto, Kugara, Uzuki and Makoto managed to knock Sojo off the floating earth, and retrieve Cloud Gouger, but Sojo cast Mei, Cloud Gouger responding and also crackling with lightning. The attraction force between the two sources of lightning sent Sojo flying upwards to his blade, destroying much of Kugara's side and also eviscerating Makoto's side, before Sojo caught Cloud Gouger in his mouth. Ikuto shouted to Kazane that they were entering Phase 2 and Kazane needed to 'use it', and as Kazane cast Kaichi Sojo flew from the air to his position, slicing off Kazane's arm and thereby cancelling the attack, and also gashing out the side of Shiyumi's head.[8]
The ensuing battle was unseen, but Sojo easily managed to defeat the Kamunabi, sending the pieces of earth crashing to the ground. Kazane was left kneeling on the beach, cursing the notion of the Enchanted Blades existing in the first place.[9] After the battle, Kazane was transferred to a Kamunabi hospital, where part of his head was bandaged and a metal replacement over his shoulder. There, Azami visited Kazane, taking down his report of the events. Kazane told Azami he believed the problem was the Enchanted Blades' existence, and while he wouldn't reveal Azami's relation to Chihiro he refused to let his blade go unchecked. In his report, Kazane would detail that rather than his squad, it was Chihiro who had killed Sojo and retrieved Cloud Gouger.[10]
Abilities[]
Overall Abilities: Kazane is an elite member of the Kamunabi who was chosen as part of the Anti-Cloud Gouger Special Forces, a squadron made specifically to counter an Enchanted Blade, one of the most powerful weapons ever created, adding credibility to his strength. He was explicitly noted to be the squad's 'secret weapon', and his sorcery apparently served as a fallback for the squad's plan.
As a sorcerer, Kazane has naturally accomplished the first stage of spirit energy usage, being able to use his spirit energy to strengthen his body to superhuman levels.

Etymology[]
The name Kazane Machi (
真 (Ma) means "true" or "real."智 (Chi) means "wisdom" or "intelligence."
The name Kazane (カザネ) is written in katakana, which do not have inherent meanings.
