“You know...I think bravery is often rooted in ignorance. Have you ever seen sorcery?” The sorcerer's speech to an aggressive hostage.[source]

The Hishaku Sorcerer is a member of the Hishaku. He is one of the three sorcerers who attacked the Rokuhira residence, killed Kunishige Rokuhira and stole the Enchanted Blades three years ago. Following the 208th Rakuzaichi, he attacked Senkutsuji Temple in order to kill Seiichi Samura in accordance with Hiruhiko's plan of attack.

He is one of the main antagonists of the Sword Bearer Assassination Arc alongside the rest of the Hishaku as a whole, and is one of the major overarching antagonists of the series.

Appearance[]

The Hishaku Sorcerer is a tall individual with dark hair tied in a queue, who is always seen wearing a fedora. He has a distinctive scar on his right eye. He bears the insignia of the Hishaku on the back of his left hand.

Personality[]

The Hishaku Sorcerer is a solemn, calculating individual. He primarily acts with a stoic nature, though has shown slight moments of joy during moments of violence, enjoying the act of intimidating a person unfamiliar with sorcery and sarcastically noting the 'karma' he would incur by attacking a Buddhist temple. He has been seen operating logically and pragmatically, calmly testing numerous strategies to counter Samura's extremely potent senses, and quickly leaving the scene upon seeing Samura had reacquired his Enchanted Blade Tobimune, acknowledging the threat Samura now posed.

Relationships[]

Allies[]

Yura[]

Yura holds a position of seniority over the Hishaku Sorcerer as his leader, and the Hishaku Sorcerer recognises his authority. During the Hishaku's meeting regarding the events of the 208th Rakuzaichi, the Hishaku Sorcerer questioned but did not oppose Yura's decision to have Kyora be the one to open Shinuchi's box, seeking to hear his leader's rationale.[1]

Enemies[]

Seiichi Samura[]

Upon attacking Senkutsuji Temple, the Hishaku Sorcerer was nonchalant as he sarcastically noted the karma he had acquired from partially destroying a religious site, an action Samura took great offense to.[2] The Hishaku Sorcerer acknowledged Samura's impressive strength and skill made him a 'legendary warrior' and recognised the need to use specific tactics to counter him.[3]

Plot[]

Past[]

Three years before the beginning of the series, the Hishaku Sorcerer attacked the Rokuhira residence alongside two of his colleagues under Yura's orders. The three successfully killed Kunishige Rokuhira and stole the six Enchanted Blades, instilling within Chihiro Rokuhira a desire for vengeance.[4]

Vs. Sojo Arc[]

Hishaku Sorcerer teleports away

The Hishaku sorcerer departs the Korogumi headquarters

Sometime prior to the start of the series, the Hishaku began providing support to the Korogumi Yakuza in exchange for regular payments. The Hishaku Sorcerer served as the two groups' liaison, on one occasion in October collecting money from the group and intimidating one of the Korogumi hostages with his sorcery, having heard the hostage's lack of experience regarding sorcery and desiring to admonish his lack of concern over it.[5]

Later, the Hishaku Sorcerer and one of his colleagues (possibly Yura) met with Genichi Sojo to ensure that everything was going as they had planned.[6]

Hishaku Briefcase

After Sojo's duel with Chihiro on the 14th of October, the Hishaku Sorcerer arrived at Kaburato Castle to pick up a piece of semi-stabilised Datenseki within a briefcase that Sojo had left in the grounds.[7]

Rakuzaichi Arc[]

In a meeting of the Hishaku's members on the 8th of November, after Yura had returned from the Rakuzaichi, the Hishaku Sorcerer questioned why Yura did not open Shinuchi's box himself, despite having spent so much time and effort working towards that objective. Yura replied he was wary of how the blade's owner would respond, and intended to observe what would happen if Kyora Sazanami attempted to use the blade.[8]

Sword Bearer Assassination Arc[]

The day after the Rakuzaichi, the Hishaku were glad to see their plans were being fulfilled, and prepared their next step; an attack on the Kamunabi's Sanso that housed the former Enchanted Blade wielders. Yura placed the operation, the Hishaku's manpower and their semi-stabilised Datenseki weaponry under Hiruhiko's command, and the Hishaku Sorcerer would be dispatched to Senkutsuji Temple alongside the majority of the sorcerers hired for the attack. Upon arriving, the Hishaku Sorcerer summoned a number of branches to destroy the main building of the temple where Samura was located, sarcastically remarking on the karma he had incurred for his destruction of the religious area.[9]

Samura attempted to goad the Hishaku Sorcerer down, but the Hishaku Sorcerer remained in his position on a branch several metres above, before detonating several smoke-laden explosives using branches to counter Samura's senses of smell and hearing. The Hishaku Sorcerer ordered more sorcerers to attack, but they were cut down, Samura having detected their hostile intent. The Hishaku Sorcerer decided to instead send in his tree branches, noting with satisfaction that Samura could not sense the inanimate objects as one managed to graze him. The Hishaku Sorcerer ordered the sorcerers to attack alongside the tree branches to overwhelm Samura.

The Hishaku Sorcerer continued to observe as the Makizumi sorcerers arrived and assisted Samura, and was pleased at the sight of Uruha and Hakuri also arriving, as all of his targets were now in one place.[10] He redoubled his forces's efforts upon spotting that the building was crumbling, and witnessed the Makizumi successfully use a mandala to teleport Uruha, Samura and Hakuri away. Almost immediately after, Samura rushed back into the temple with Tobimune in hand, swiftly killing the Datenseki-wielding sorcerers. The Hishaku Sorcerer quickly left the scene, wary of the threat posed by the blade.[11]

Abilities[]

Overall Abilities: As a member of the Hishaku, a small group of elite sorcerers, the Hishaku Sorcerer is a powerful combatant. He was easily able to destroy a large part of Senkutsuji Temple using his sorcery and was able to keep Seiichi Samura, a former wielder of an Enchanted Blade and highly skilled swordsman, at bay with only his tree branches and the assistance of several hired sorcerers.

As a sorcerer, the Hishaku Sorcerer has accomplished the first stage of spirit energy usage, being able to use his spirit energy to strengthen his body to superhuman levels.

Sorcery[]

Senkutsuji Destroyed

The Hishaku Sorcerer destroys Senkutsuji

Tree Generation: The Hishaku Sorcerer is able to summon trees from surfaces, similar to his leader Yura. The trees are incredibly powerful, able to tear through a temple building in moments.[12] The trees can be grown to a variety of sizes, from large enough to destroy a building to smaller sizes suitable for intimidating individuals.[13]

The Hishaku Sorcerer is additionally able to 'plant' trees within people which can be set to burst out on a certain condition. When negotiating with the Korogumi leader, the Hishaku Sorcerer 'planted' a tree in him, which was set to activate if the boss tried to disclose information on the Hishaku, resulting in multiple tree branches to envelop the entire room, attacking anyone within.[14]

Fire-Based Teleportation: The Hishaku Sorcerer uses this type of movement sorcery that is separate from his own sorcery. He forms a hand sign with his left hand and teleports, with his prior location vanishing into flames. It is identical to the teleportation used by his leader Yura.[15]
