“At least let me go down with my head held high.” The Core Station Vessel's determination that Izaru kill him despite his nerves and hesitation[source]

The Core Station Vessel is the appointed Vessel of the Core Station maintaining the barrier system of Kamunabi Headquarters, and a learned Kamunabi sorcerer. He serves as the Kamunabi's monitoring system and helped coordinate the agents during the Hishaku's attack on the Headquarters on the 14th of November.

He is a prominent character in the Sword Bearer Assassination Arc.

Appearance[]

The Core Station Vessel is a tall man with long hair. He has three markings beneath each of his eyes, and a circular marking under his mouth. He wears baggy pants and foregoes a shirt. Due to having undergone the process to become a Vessel, he lacks several organs.

Prior to his selection as Vessel, he had shorter hair and wore the standard Kamunabi uniform.

Personality[]

The Core Station Vessel is typically a stoic figure focused on his duty, most obvious during the Hishaku's assault on Kamunabi Headquarters, during which the Vessel made announcements across the facility and relayed information from one side to another. He is able to rationally and coolly focus on the situation, as when he identified the seeded agents within Headquarters and detected there was a second Vessel in the building. He is not above showing concern, however, as when Izaru ordered focus on the Hishaku while the seeded agents had not yet been identified.

In the past, however, the Vessel was significantly less concerned with his duty and far more about making ends meet. Having grown up in poverty, he was exceptionally interested in the lucrative payout from the ten-year term of a Vessel, and became one of the most learned Kamunabi sorcerers in addition to going through the arduous process to become a Vessel for this purpose. During his screening with a Kamunabi panel including Izaru, the Vessel outright lied that his motive was for the nation.

That lie became truth over time, with the Vessel even offering for himself to be killed for the sake of defeating the Hishaku during their attack, even telling Izaru to send the money to his parents. He admitted if he was to die, he wanted to do it with pride, which Izaru found admirable.

Relationships[]

Allies[]

Izaru[]

Eight years in the past, it was Izaru who was part of the panel judging whether the future Vessel should be granted the position, and decided to do so.

During the Hishaku's assault on Kamunabi Headquarters, Izaru descended to the Core Station to coordinate Kamunabi countermeasures with the Core Station team. The Vessel and Izaru communicated the situation fluidly as they decided on new courses of action as the situation unfolded. The Vessel ultimately defers to Izaru's judgement as his superior, and in return, Izaru relies on the Vessel's surveillance to report new developments in the battle.

When the Vessel offered his own death in order to end the discord between two Vessels interfering with communications, Izaru was confused but quickly decided to acquiesce after the Vessel voiced his determination to at least die in the right way. Izaru voiced his respect for the Vessel's decision.

Plot[]

Past[]

In the past, the Core Station Vessel lived in poverty, and so he greatly valued money.

Eight years ago, the Core Station Vessel was chosen to be the next Vessel, having been one of the most advanced candidates available who had memorised information equal to the entirety of the Headquarters Level 2 library. At the final screening for Vessel selection, presided over by Izaru, the Vessel lied that he wished to serve the nation and its people, though in truth he simply wanted the lucrative payment after his ten years of service.[1][2] He underwent the painful four-month process, losing a number of his organs and his reproductive function, before being stationed at the Core Station over the next eight years.[3]

On the 14th of November, the Vessel communicated with the leaders meeting after Samura's appearance at the Kyoto Bloodshed Hotel to report that the Hishaku were attacking the barrier with Pine Tree Sorcery directly over the location of Shinuchi. Kasen ordered for the Hishaku to be let into Level 1 so as to avoid a battle on the surface endangering the lives of civilians, and the Vessel did so, detecting seven entrants. The leaders quickly reasoned these were the remaining members of the Hishaku and organised a strike force, while the Vessel ordered for all non-combatants to descend beneath Level 3.[4]

The Vessel promptly contacted the West Entrance garrison on Level 1, relaying to the commander there that there were seven hostile entrants to Level 1, believed to be Hishaku, with three approaching from the west. He signalled 'Code Mouse' to indicate the threat was beyond the garrison's capabilities and stated that reinforcements were headed to the Threat Elimination Grounds at the central area of Level 1.[5]

Not long after, Izaru walked to the Core Station to ask about the situation after hearing about an agent exploding into branches. The Vessel informed him they were investigating the cause and Shinuchi was still secure. Izaru maintained they had to protect four things above all else: three among them being the Core Station, Shinuchi and the Master Swordsman. The Vessel made an announcement across the facility regarding the explosions from four minutes earlier, and reported that he had detected seeds planted in the bodies by a Hishaku sorcerer, noting that the Hishaku must have blackmailed the Kamunabi agents. Stating he had detected around fifty seeded agents, the Vessel ordered for all personnel to stay out of Hakuri's way and not move.

As casualties continued to increase, the Core Station Vessel noticed something strange. Izaru reasoned there was likely a second group of traitors, more willing than the seeded agents to work with the Hishaku and the ones who had supplied the information on the agents' families to the Hishaku in the first place. One of the six supporting sorcerers shouted that the situation was hopeless given how they had no picture of their enemies and the Hishaku did, but Izaru shut him down, ordering that they refocus on the situation and telling the Vessel to identify any agent not following orders. Izaru stated they could take the opportunity to eliminate the traitors after they uncovered them.[6]

At around 10:00 am, seeing one of the six supporting sorcerers, to Izaru's left, anxiously and repeatedly look at the clock, Izaru immediately grew suspicious at how he was so oddly concerned about time. The sorcerer hastily brought down a portion of the barrier outside the Threat Elimination Grounds shortly before Izaru summoned beads and used them to fling the sorcerer into a wall. Izaru quickly demanded to know if the situation was still as normal with the Vessel and the Vessel responded there was a split-second disruption, but he had restored it; however, the positions of the five Hishaku members outside the Threat Elimination Grounds had shifted to the west wing of Level 5.[7]

With the traitor tied to the wall, Izaru ordered for all elite units to be called in to surround the Hishaku. The Vessel was concerned that they still hadn't identified the remaining seeded individuals but Izaru noted they didn't have time; they would simply watch to see how they reacted after the command was given out. Izaru confirmed the lower-ranking members should continue to stay in the place while the elites attacked to the west, keeping away from the centre; no matter the damage to the building, they had to eliminate the Hishaku.[8]

After Yura activated Magatsumi, Izaru requested confirmation from the Vessel that Shinuchi's power was being used, and why the prominent spirit energy above, their reinforcements, hadn't come in yet. The Vessel stated that the barrier had been interfered with, and communications to the outside had been cut off. Izaru accusingly eyed the remaining supporting sorcerers, but the Vessel spoke up and stated the issue was not from one of them; there was a second Vessel in the building. Izaru immediately used a nearby lantern to relay the situation across Headquarters regarding the second Vessel. The Vessel noted he would have noticed if the enemy Vessel had been at Headquarters the whole time, so it must be one of the Hishaku. Izaru then relayed across Headquarters the command to eliminate the Hishaku at all costs, no matter who stood in their way.[9]

Izaru asked the Core Station Vessel if he could detect which of the Hishaku was the second Vessel, but the Vessel replied that Shinuchi's sheer power was interfering with his field. Izaru ordered to the complex to focus on eliminating all the Hishaku for the time being.[10]

Overseeing the situation, the Vessel stated that Izaru needed to kill him, as it was the only option left. If he were to die, the Hishaku's Vessel would gain full control of the Headquarters barrier, but the discord from the presence of Vessels would vanish and communications would be re-established. Izaru viewed his decision as admirable and readied his sorcery, but was surprised as Hokuto attacked from behind. Hakuri then appeared in the Core Station, the Vessel turning to look at him before Hakuri touched him, registering him and transporting him into his Storehouse. Once there, the Vessel looked around, wondering where he was.

Izaru quickly redirected his attack to force Hokuto through a wall before leaping out to confront him. Before they could clash, however, the Vessel disappeared, to Hokuto and Izaru's confusion, and Hakuri appeared in his place, feigning confusion at where the Vessel had gone, having in truth transported him into the Storehouse.[11]

Abilities[]

Overall Abilities: The Core Station Vessel is an immensely learned sorcerer, having absorbed an amount of information regarding sorcery on par with the Masumi, who have mastered the entirety of the knowledge of the Level 2 library in Kamunabi Headquarters.[2]

As a sorcerer, the Core Station Vessel has accomplished the first stage of spirit energy usage, being able to use his spirit energy to strengthen his body to superhuman levels.

Vessel Status: As the Vessel of the Core Station, he holds direct control of the vast amount of spirit energy entering the facility, and is capable of shaping it into a powerful barrier; in effect, he is the centerpiece of the Kamunabi's barrier system.[12]

Given his governance of the barrier, the Vessel is additionally able to track spirit energy signatures across the facility with ease, and can gauge their strength.[13] He can immediately tell when the barrier is being attacked, and by what or whom.[14] The Vessel can customise the barrier at will, temporarily taking down part of the barrier to allow the Hishaku to enter Kamunabi Headquarters and patching a hole in the barrier almost instantly after one of the traitorous supporting sorcerers took a portion of it down.[15][16] Using lanterns, he can communicate with individuals across the facility, and he can also use the intercom system to make large-scale announcements.[17][18]
