Summary[]
Uruha is formally introduced: Yoji Uruha, Bearer of the Enchanted Blade Kumeyuri.
Uruha himself begins recalling when Kunishige entrusted him with Kumeyuri and commented the blade suited him, thinking of it as the high point in his life. He developed a great respect for Kunishige, admiring his determination, composure and observational abilities. After fighting hard in the Seitei War, Uruha returned Kumeyuri to Kunishige as per the latter's request, after which he lost contact with him for 15 years. It wasn't until after Uruha's housing at Kokugoku Hot Spring that Uruha finds out about Kunishige and Cloud Gouger bearer Misaka's murders at the Hishaku's hands and is devastated.
Fushimi, one of the 14 elite Kamunabi guards assigned to the Sanso, tells this to Uruha, adding that the Hishaku would undoubtedly pursue the sword bearers in order to use the blades, and if that were to happen the country the sword bearers fought in defence of would be destroyed; hence this time, it would be the Kamunabi's turn to protect the sword bearers. Closer to the present, Uruha mulls over his situation at Kokugoku Hot Spring, staying in the same place with the same people. Fushimi speaks up, noting news had come up from Kamunabi headquarters regarding a seventh Enchanted Blade and a supposed son of Kunishige.
Fushimi notes his lineage is unconfirmed, and Uruha wholeheartedly believes it must be an impersonator, aggravated at the thought. Fushimi asks why he is confident in his belief, and Uruha relays his belief that Kunishige would never be able to care for a child. Once again moving into his thoughts, Uruha states he is ready to die at any time, having lost his will to live after Kunishige's death.
On the 9th of November, the Hishaku's forces engaged the fortress. The Kamunabi guards quickly usher Uruha to an exit, Fushimi noting they had spotted an unusual weapon in the attackers' possession, and believes while they would be unlikely to succeed, they could buy time for Uruha's escape. Fushimi yells at Uruha to run and ensure he is not killed, and Uruha does so, donning his hat and robes and grabbing a katana.
Eight kilometres from Kokugoku Hot Spring, Uruha enters Atago Station, where Fushimi has informed him new bodyguards have been dispatched. Uruha questions who they could send if Fushimi's squad wasn't enough, believing only individuals on Azami or Hiyuki's level to suffice. Approaching the station, Uruha wonders where his bodyguards are before coming across Hakuri and holding his sword to his throat. Hakuri asks if he's Uruha, before revealing his Kamunabi insignia at Uruha's prompting. Hakuri moves to explain there's one other with him before Uruha notes four sorcerers approaching them.
Hakuri recalls a conversation he had with Chihiro on the way to the station, where Chihiro states exceptions like Hakuri aside, only one type of spirit energy could abide within a person's body, and that in addition to the energy's limited capacity means forming a Lifelong Contract with a blade removes one's original sorcery; hence without their blade and without spirit energy, the sword bearers were defenceless. In the present, the sorcerers approach and Hakuri immediately readies Isou, but blood spurts from his nose and he collapses, still in a state of recovery from the previous day's events.
Uruha kills the hired sorcerers
Uruha is momentarily shocked and confused but adapts quickly, recalling Fushimi's words that he had to survive or the squad would curse him. Unsheathing his blade at rapid speed, Uruha cuts down the attacker closest to him before tossing his hat in the face of a second, speeding around and bisecting the hat and the sorcerer's head as he leaps over the remaining two, slashing them down in an instant. As Uruha comments his skill has gone rusty, Hakuri is shocked to see Uruha's sheer skill at eliminating four sorcerers with a standard katana.
Wondering why the sorcerers weren't using the weapons he had seen in Kokugoku, Uruha reasons there must be a restriction of some kind, before turning to see more sorcerers charging up nearby stairs. Uruha is annoyed at the amount of power the Hishaku has dredged up, as Hakuri sees the train behind them will be leaving soon. Pointing it out, the two head on just as the doors close, but enter a room to see three more attackers. Uruha wryly remarks they were surrounded, but Hakuri spots Chihiro in the next train car, responding the sorcerers were the ones surrounded.
As the three sorcerers notice where Hakuri is looking, they turn around only to see nothing but water droplets in the air. In fact, Chihiro had already used Nishiki to dash around them and slice them down. Chihiro politely greets Uruha, recalling that his father spoke of him often, and promising to not let him die. Seeing Enten, Uruha realises Chihiro must be the one who claimed to be Kunishige's son in the Kamunabi's reports, and immediately knows that Chihiro is indeed Kunishige's son, screaming that he can fight for Kunishige's sake again. Chihiro and Hakuri find the sight odd.
