“Defend to the Death” ( () (しゃ) Shisha) is the thirty-third chapter of the manga series Kagurabachi, written and illustrated by Takeru Hokazono.

Summary[]

Chihiro and Hakuri quickly make their way toward the emergency exit, leaving behind Soya Sazanami and the Hishaku Leader. As they depart, Hiyuki arrives and confronts the Hishaku Leader. However, he tells her that it is the Sazanamis who will need to sacrifice their lives to protect the Rakuzaichi auction. He then uses his teleportation ability to leave, leaving Hiyuki to face several Sazanami fighters who arrive to challenge her. Noticing Hiyuki's Flame Bone, the Sazanami fighters recognize her as a Kamunabi sorcerer and prepare for battle.

During a flashback to an old Rakuzaichi auction, Kyora Sazanami brings his two sons, Hakuri and his younger brother brother Tenri, on stage. He stresses the importance of their lineage and urges them to protect the Sazanami Clan's legacy from any threats. In the present, Shiba interrogates Tenri Sazanami, one of the defeated Tou members, demanding information on how to access the gate to the Sazanami cemetery. Tenri refuses to reveal anything, and when Enji offers to speak, Tenri tells him not to.

As Shiba steps away, Tenri notices an object dropping in front of him from Kyora's sub-dimensional vault. A flashback involving the Hishaku Leader and Kyora Sazanami reveals that the object is the final creation of Genichi Sojo, made before his death. Sojo's invention, crafted in an effort to reach the same level as Kunishige Rokuhira, has the power to temporarily stabilize the Datenseki, granting its user abilities comparable to an Enchanted Blade.

Remembering his father's words about defending the auction to the very end, Tenri seizes the object, causing his Spirit Energy to manifest in a jellyfish-like form. Shiba realizes that Tenri has gained powers similar to an Enchanted Blade. Meanwhile, Soya Sazanami launches a surprise attack on Chihiro and Hakuri. Chihiro notices his older brother's different demeanor and understands that Soya is serious about killing him. As the chapter ends, Hakuri assesses the weakening embers in Chihiro's Cloud Gouger and urges him to move forward while he stays behind to confront his brother.
