Summary[]
In a bloodied room, a man sits on a couch surrounded by various bodies. As he sips from an glass, swirling the ice cubes within, he murmurs that his opponents had been far too weak. Abruptly hearing something, the man smiles; he realises the Police Blade Squad have been alerted to his presence in the area, and are right outside the door.
The squad enter, blades at the ready, only to find no one inside. A light-haired member of the squad radios in to his superior, reporting the murderer's absence, and they decide he must have escaped. The light-haired man wonders what purpose the man had for killing the people, striding by the clock, which has almost reached midnight, before seeing a glass, ice cubes still present within. He abruptly realises the murderer must still be close by, and is abruptly scared by a loud noise; which turns out to be the clock hitting midnight and a bird sound cuckooing. The man steadies himself, relieved, not noticing the murderer is right behind him and has killed every member of the squad but himself.
Sometime later, the director of the National Police Agency receives news that the Police Blade Squad had been eliminated by a single individual. He muses that the culprit must not be an average murderer. It is then revealed that right before the light-haired squad member had died from blood loss, he had attached a tracking device on the murderer as he was criticising the police's skills and claiming only certain people could match up with him. In the present, the director orders his secretary to call the shinobi.
During the Sengoku Era (during the years 1467-1638), when Japan was embroiled in battles across the country, shinobi played a major role in serving various daimyos and landlords with their high level of combat ability. In the current peaceful era, shinobi have settled into various occupations: some work as assassins or bodyguards, others have simply adopted a civilian lifestyle, and others still tire of the peaceful age and greedily continue to fight as they like. In addition, some shinobi work for the government, as the nation's greatest military asset; two such shinobi now stand in the police director's office.
