The "Master Swordsman" (
Appearance[]
The Master Swordsman is a lanky, dilapidated looking man dressed in shabby white robes fastened with a black belt. He has black shoulder-length hair and prominent eyebags underneath his light-coloured eyes. When activating Magatsumi's ability to allow external users to wield the blade while simultaneously attempting to possess them, black shadows form over the Master Swordsman's eyes.
Personality[]
Nothing concrete is known as of yet about the Master Swordsman's personality. Given the Master Swordsman's possible involvement in the massacres committed at the 208th Rakuzaichi, Chihiro has speculated him to be less morally upstanding than his compatriots.[1]
Relationships[]
Seiichi Samura[]
As with all the other Enchanted Blade wielders from the Seitei War, Samura wishes for the Master Swordsman to die for his actions committed in the war, and is devoted to killing him.[2]
Plot[]
Past[]
18 years ago, the Master Swordsman fought in the Seitei War, wielding the Enchanted Blade Magatsumi. It is said his blade's contributions had a particularly notable role in achieving victory for Japan in the war.[3]
After the murders of Kunishige Rokuhira and Misaka at the hands of the Hishaku, the other Enchanted Blade wielders from the Seitei War with the exception of the Master Swordsman were relocated to heavily guarded facilities under the Kamunabi's protection. The Master Swordsman was instead placed in a barren room containing ten circular pillars adorned with seals of protection.[4]
Rakuzaichi Arc[]
The Master Swordsman twitched when Kyora Sazanami conducted a run-through of the Rakuzaichi auction on the 1st of November.[5]
One week later, on the day of the 208th Rakuzaichi, the 8th of November, as Kyora took Magatsumi out of its box in an attempt to use it to fend off Chihiro Rokuhira within his Storehouse, the Master Swordsman detected that Kyora was wielding the blade and activated it by calling its name, Magatsumi, shadows beginning to cover the Master Swordsman's eyes.
A droplet of spirit energy fell from the still-sheathed blade and formed a dark circular patch on the ground, flowers blooming from the ground and a singular butterfly of spirit energy appearing and merging with Kyora's Magatsumi-clutching hand. In this manner, Kyora was granted access to Magatsumi's spirit energy amplification and its techniques, the amplified spirit energy taking the shape of a massive butterfly above Kyora. Kyora noted he could only channel a fraction of the blade's power but it was already surpassing his expectations, before darting forward to slash at Chihiro, the still-sheathed blade clashing evenly with Enten.[6]
Kyora noticed a foreign presence within his mind, speculating it to be either Magatsumi or the Master Swordsman, shadows slightly descending over his eyes representing the attempted possession. Refusing to allow the foreign entity to possess him, Kyora resisted the presence with everything he had while simultaneously fighting Chihiro and Hiyuki, causing his mental state to deteriorate significantly.[7]
This deterioration was physically manifested within his Storehouse, which quickly began crumbling and soon forced the three combatants out. Kyora continued to resist the possession with everything he had, kneeling on the Rakuzaichi stage as the dark patch flooded out of Magatsumi, the resulting flower field killing large numbers of auction-goers. Kyora was able to hold out long enough for Chihiro and Hakuri to successfully rescue all remaining prisoners within the Storehouse, by refocusing on his sheer dedication for the Rakuzaichi to proceed, and Kyora remained as himself even when his body finally succumbed to his injuries and he died.[8]
The Master Swordsman had no response when Chihiro and Hiyuki later interacted with Magatsumi.[9]
Abilities[]
Based on his title, the Master Swordsman can be assumed to be an extremely powerful individual. He was entrusted with wielding the Enchanted Blade Magatsumi in the Seitei War, and his blade was noted to have an especially large role in turning the tides of battle and ensuring Japan's victory.[10]
Combat Prowess[]
Master Swordsman: It can be assumed based on his title that the Master Swordsman is a highly skilled swordsman, being one of the six Enchanted Blade wielders who fought and helped achieve victory during the Seitei War.
